I've heard it said that if alcohol is causing problems in your life, then you have a problem with alcohol. Alcohol can cause problems in relationships, finances, health, employment, etc. I don't think it has to destroy an entire life either; just certain areas can indicate an alcohol problem.

If you buy a 12-pack, 18-pack, or 24-pack of lite beer and drink 3/4 of the pack in a day...does that make you an alcoholic?

Janice is right. I remember when I was in middle school and we had a lady come by for Health class to talk about mental illness. She explained the difference between "having a problem" and "not having a problem" quite well. She said if you come home from work and put on a Viking helmet and shield with a tunic and sandals and sword, that's your business and it's not a problem.
If, she said, you show up at WORK in the same outfit, THAT'S a problem.

I think the same principle would hold true for alcoholism.

If you can't live without drinking alcohol all the time and it affects you and those around you alcoholism, imo. When all you can do is think about your next drink it's a problem. Alcohol makes some people mean. It turns them into someone, they otherwise, may not be such as abusive, etc.

As for knowing if you're an alcoholic, I think if you can't go without alcohol for even one day, it's a pretty good sign that you are.

Or, there's a typo.

That would be a sign of a a person who's a raging alcoholic. There are many degrees of alcoholism. Many people go to work every day and drink at night, while others drink only on weekends. Some people go on a bender once a month. It's the loss of control that determines if you have a problem. When the alcohol controls you, not the other way around; that's the time to take notice.

I've also heard that alcoholism is marked by not being able to stop once you've started. Thus, the phenomenon of people who haven't drank alcohol for years still being alcoholics, just non-practicing ones.

You know you're an alcoholic when you cannot stop drinking. Drinking a lot does not mean that you're an alcoholic, I know a few friends who can drink a lot in one night, and I mean A LOT, but they don't need it every weekend. I also know some one who has one drink a day, and only that one drink unless he's at a party or something. When you have a drink and feel like you need to constantly drink after that and it starts interfering with your life then you have a problem.

When alcohol takes a control of your life; where you live, each day, thinking and focusing everything on booze, i.e. When your next cocktail, not able to function after a certain amount of time with consuming a beverage. Drinking to the point of becoming completely intoxicated. When alcohol is paramount to everything or anything.

When others around you tell you have a drinking problem or say things along the line of "I don't want to be around you when you drink" etc.

Default Alcoholism

Alcoholism is a very common problem, which is why so many people are looking for effective Alcohol Rehabilitation Centres. While searching for treatment, remember that no two rehabilitation centers are structured the same way and there is no one correct way of dealing with all kinds of alcoholism.

Alcoholism is also neither a purely physiological nor a purely psychological condition. The best Alcohol Rehabilitation Centres across the country will treat both elements of the condition.

I hope that your brother may seek intervention and have full recovery from alcoholism.

In does in my opinion. At the very least, there could be a potential problem that won't take long to get out of control. It's a wake up call. Easier to control it now than later.

And Georgia, if you have to ask, then you probably are, or are headed in that direction.
