Just curious if the Beverly Lasalle character was the 1st gay character on television?

Well, actually AITF introduced one a few seasons earlier, though we only ever saw him in one episode I believe.

Archie's supposedly 'rough and tumble' friend turned out to be gay, in an episode where Archie was making fun of Mike's effeminate friend, Roger.

And I'm fairly sure that the Lear series "Hot L Baltimore" predated LaSalle, and that show featured at least two ongoing gay characters.

Thanks for the response & the heads up retro. I don't know too much about Hot L Baltimore, only that it was a rare flop for Norman Lear.

yea, "HOT L. BALTIMORE" predated Beverly LaSalle by at least a couple years.
And I think that other "AITF" episode was in it's first season.
