Well, actually AITF introduced one a few seasons earlier, though we only ever saw him in one episode I believe.
Archie's supposedly 'rough and tumble' friend turned out to be gay, in an episode where Archie was making fun of Mike's effeminate friend, Roger. And I'm fairly sure that the Lear series "Hot L Baltimore" predated LaSalle, and that show featured at least two ongoing gay characters.
