Default Criterion announces "ROSEMARY'S BABY" for October

It's coming to Blu, in the best way possible.

ROSEMARY'S BABY still frightens. From the hallucinatory rape itself, to the sheer loneliness and dread that plagues her pregnancy, Polanski's classic is just that: a classic. Criterion, who's already quite familiar with Polanski's work (stellar editions of REPULSION, KNIFE IN THE WATER, CUL DE SAC already exist), is gifting us with a new Blu-ray and DVD of his touchstone work.

This October 30, ROSEMARY'S BABY comes to the Criterion Collection and included are

• New high-definition digital restoration, approved by director Roman Polanski, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack on the Blu-ray edition

• New interviews with Polanski, actor Mia Farrow, and producer Robert Evans

• KOMEDA, KOMEDA, a feature-length documentary on the life and work of jazz musician and composer Krzysztof Komeda, who wrote the score for Rosemary’s Baby

• 1997 radio interview with author Ira Levin from Leonard Lopate’s WNYC program New York and Company on the 1967 novel, the sequel, and the film

• Plus, a booklet featuring an essay by critic Ed Park and Levin’s afterword for the 2003 New American Library edition of his novel, in which he discusses its and the film’s origins

Default “THE LOVED ONES” hits DVD

One of the most striking Australian imports on the recent scream scene, writer/director Sean Byrne’s THE LOVED ONES is set to make its U.S. DVDebut this fall. Read on for the details and first peek at the cover art.

Winner of the Toronto International Film Festival’s Midnight Madness People’s Choice award, THE LOVED ONES stars Xavier Samuel (pictured, from ROAD KILL and the soon-to-be-released BAIT 3D) as Brent, a high-schooler who’s the object of obsession of disturbed classmate Lola (Robin McLeavy, just seen as the future President’s ill-fated mother in ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER). When he spurns her invitation to accompany her to the prom, she schemes to abduct him and hold him captive in her house for a very private and twisted celebration. The DVD, out September 11 from Paramount Home Media Distribution, will present the uncut, unrated version of the movie, in 16x9 widescreen with Dolby Digital 5.1 sound and UltraViolet capability for streaming and downloading, plus interviews with Samuel, McLeavy and makeup FX supervisor Justin Dix. Retail price is $19.99; THE LOVED ONES will also be available on-demand and for digital download. See the trailer below and our review of the film here and check out Fango #314 for an interview with Byrne.

Default Official Release: Specs for the Re-Animator Blu-ray

There were some minor rumblings about this yesterday, but Image has forwarded the official word along...

On September 4th, Image Entertainment resurrects one of the greatest horror films ever made with the Blu-ray debut of Stuart Gordon’s cult classic H.P. Lovecraft’s Re-Animator. Presented in a brand-new 1080p HD transfer approved by producer Brian Yuzna, the 1985 shocker was ranked #32 of 50 on EW’s “Top 50 Cult Films,” inspired two sequels as well as an award-winning stage musical!

Featuring high-resolution DTS-HD audio and packed with bonus features, the Re-Animator Blu-ray hits retail with an SRP of $17.97.

Adapted by Dennis Paoli, William J. Norris and Stuart Gordon from the H.P. Lovecraft short story, Re-Animator tells the strange tale of medical student Dan Cain (Bruce Abbot) and his girlfriend Megan Halsey (Barbara Crampton), both of them drawn to odd new student Herbert West (Jeffrey Combs) who’s conducting secret experiments involving the re-animation of dead tissue. When one of the instructors, Dr. Carl Hill (David Gale), stumbles upon their activities, West murders him -- but is brought back to life, now thirsting for revenge as well as lusting after Megan. The final denouement features the re-animated Dr. Hill squaring off against Herbert and Dan in a battle royale within the school’s morgue, complete with resurrected “henchmen” and undoubtedly one of the greatest visual double entendres in all horror cinema!

Bonus features for the Re-Animator Blu-ray include...

Documentary: “Re-Animator Resurrectus”

Default 3 Stephen King Mini-Series Together in the 'Triple Terror Collection'

Between 2002 and 2004, Warner Home Video individually released DVDs with 3 separate mini- series productions based on Stephen King novels: Salem's Lot (the 2004 version starring Rob Lowe of The West Wing, Parks & Recreation), 1997's The Shining (starring Steven Weber of Wings and Rebecca De Mornay of Risky Business), and 1990's It starring Harry Anderson (Night Court), Annette O'Toole (Smallville) and John Ritter (Three's Company). On October 16th Warner is re-releasing all three of these together as one 6-DVD package, named the Triple Terror Collection, at one low cost. We don't have the exact cost yet, but we do have the package art for this new release. Check it out:

I already pre-ordered the Puppet Master I-III Blu-rays.

This series was long overdue for some new features and I am looking forward to the new commentaries.

Full Moon did a great job with the original Puppet Master on Blu-ray (as well as the original Subspecies) and I can't wait to see the others get the HD treatment, especially PM III as it's my second favorite PM film.

Default 'Screaming in High Heels' Comes to DVD

The 1980s were a glorious time in the horror genre, and one of the main reasons was the Scream Queen. Scream Queens were the lovely, buxom heroines in slasher films. They were frequently naked, and rarely victims. The true Scream Queens were found in the more salacious films, and were frequently direct-to-video. Women like Jamie Lee Curtis and Heather Langenkamp were often deemed Scream Queens (for Halloween and Nightmare on Elm Street, respectively). But the true, original Scream Queens are Linnea Quigley, Brinke Stevens, and Michelle Bauer. The three women have well over 300 credits among them, with titles like Sorority Babes in the Slime Ball Bowl-a-Rama, Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers, Creepozoids, Slumber Party Massacre, Death Row Diner, and Terror Night.

These little-known heroines are finally getting their due with a documentary called Screaming in High Heels: The Rise and Fall of the Scream Queen Era. "Featuring iconic directors of the time including David DeCoteau (Creepozoids), Richard Gabai (Nightmare Sisters), Fred Olen Ray (The Tomb), Screaming in High Heels: The Rise & Fall of the Scream Queen Era takes viewers through the prime of the "Trio" as they rule the screen with their sex appeal and vocal cords, and ultimately, into their very real demise from the genre that made them blood covered stars."

The documentary hits DVD on August 28th.

Default Synapse to Birth More Belial on DVD

Basket Case 3: The Progeny is making its way back onto DVD.

Frank Henenlotter's threequel made its debut on disc back in '04 from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment. Synapse has picked up the title, however, for a re-issue which streets on October 9th.

Belial, everyone's favorite beast-in-a-basket, is back in BASKET CASE 3: THE PROGENY, the sensational third film in Frank Henenlotter's wildly macabre horror series. After being separated again from his conjoined twin brother Duane (Kevin Van Hentenryck), Belial finds out he’s going to be a deformed daddy! Mrs. Belial (“Eve,” played by Denise Coop) delivers a litter of bouncing baby monsters, but the blessed event turns into a nightmarish ordeal when the police kidnap the little critters. They should know it’s not safe to anger Belial! Attacking the cops in a climactic, gory rampage, everyone’s favorite mutant mauler stops at nothing to get his newborns back!

The special features will only include the original theatrical trailer.

Default The Most Important News of 2012: Deep Rising is Coming to Blu-ray

Next to Tremors, I personally believe Deep Rising is one of the best monster movies to come out of the '90s.

Released in January (considered prime dumping grounds for films a studio didn't know what to do with) of 1998, the film stars Treat Williams, Famke Janssen and the creature design work of Rob Bottin.

Oh, and it was an early Stephen Sommers film - y'know, the guy who gave us The Mummy reboot and Van Helsing.

After directing films like 1993's The Adventures of Huck Finn and '94's The Jungle Book, Sommers needed to exercise his love for monster flicks and so he penned Deep Rising. It's clever, it's gruesome and it's prime "Treat Williams." All in all, great stuff.

And it's coming to Blu-ray courtesy of Mill Creek Entertainment on October 9th. Sadly, no bonus features are coming with this presentation, but it is being packaged with the serviceable The Puppet Masters. You remember that one, don't you? Head inside for the specs.

Deep Rising - Buckle up for edge-of-your seat excitement with the explosive hit DEEP RISING, an unstoppable high seas action thriller that moves at full scream ahead! When a band of ruthless hijackers invade the world's most luxurious cruise ship, they're shocked to discover the passengers have mysteriously vanished! But that doesn't mean they are alone! Something terrifying is lurking just out of sight: a deadly force from the unexplored depths of the ocean that begins to snatch the horrified intruders one by one! Treat Willliams (THE DEVIL'S OWN) and sexy Famke Janssen (GOLDENEYE, ROUNDERS) lead a group of survivors who must overcome incredible odds in their breathtaking battle to escape the doomed ship alive!

The Puppet Masters – Here's the edge-of-your-seat thriller that delivers unrelenting suspense and nonstop action! Donald Sutherland leads a team of top-level government agents who make a chilling discovery – extraterrestrial beings have landed on Earth and are quickly taking control of the residents of a small midwestern town – manipulating their bodies and minds like puppets!
