What a sad week to be a TV sitcom fan. Two beloved characters from my 2 favorite shows of all time are now but fond memories for those of us lucky enough to have seen their reruns over and over again and hoping for more every time out. Hearing of the loss of Barbara Billingsley left me deeply saddened and hurt, yet also comforted by the fact that "Leave It To Beaver", and her great contribution to the show's success and lasting appeal as one of TV's greatest Moms, will always be with us. With the news of Tom Bosley's death a mere 3 days later of heart failure and lung cancer, those same feelings returned to me only in a more personal sense, since I was still a child when "Happy Days" began in 1973 and I grew up along with the show, never dreaming that it would still be on when I reached my adulthood. The show underwent many changes through the years but one thing that remained constant was Tom Bosley as "Mr. C." with his jolly Santa Claus smile and his sometimes firm but always fair parenting style that was ironically patterned after Ward Cleaver and other TV dads from the 1950s that were always home whenever their families needed them and the viewers were forever thankful for it. There is one memory that I have from "Happy Days" that confirms this for me. A few of you have already mentioned his touching speech that he made in the series finale where he thanked all the viewers for being part of his family. If you look at the opening credits for that episode and for that entire final season, there is a brief shot of the first episode when Howard is watching TV and accidentally knocks down Joanie. The next shot is of Joanie, now fully grown, being helped up by Howard and they are both sitting together again as if nothing has changed only they are much happier and just a little bit nostalgic. That's the way I will choose to remember Tom Bosley and his TV counterpart Howard Cunningham: physically big and strong and a little rough around the edges on the outside, but on the inside, soft and gentle and understanding even when he felt mad enough to lose his patience whenever Richie or Joanie did something wrong. He was the kind of Dad that you wished you had and one that you loved to watch.

So long, Mr. C! May all of your days be "Happy Days", just like mine are whenever it's on!
