Bedbugs Reserve Room At Chicago-Area Hotel
Event Aims To Educate People About Bedbug Infestations
Mark D. Carlson, Associated Press Writer

Posted: Tuesday, September 21, 2010

Rosemont, Ill. -- While most businesses recoil at the mere thought of bedbugs, one suburban Chicago hotel is welcoming the bloodsucking pests - at least this week. Experts are gathering at the Hyatt Rosemont to talk about the pests that are running rampant in the Northeast.

Jeff White, an entomologist, or bug expert, in Trenton, N.J., said it's a serious issue and people need to know how to spot bedbugs. Over the weekend, he packed up a jar of them and sent them on a car ride to Rosemont, where they are on display at the 2010 North American Bed Bug Summit.

Aaron Bastable, director of sales at the Hyatt Rosemont, said he's confident White and other exhibiters will keep the bedbugs locked tight in their jars. "You know these are entomologists and these are the professionals in the industry," Bastable said. "If anyone knows how to contain them, then it's going to be them."

And, if anything goes wrong, the hotel is occupied by a small army of people who have trained bedbug hunters and exterminators. They said trained dogs can sniff out the bugs, which can be killed with chemicals, heat and steam.

Athletic clothing and shoe maker Nike Inc. said Sunday it was temporarily closing its Niketown store in New York City after it became the latest victim of the bloodsucking pests. Reports of bedbugs have surged in recent years as they have become resistant to common pesticides. Pest control workers say New York City is the epicenter for the outbreak. Bedbugs have been recently discovered there in a theater, office buildings, other stores, housing projects and posh apartments.

Chicago is expected to have a comparable problem in two to three years, bug control professionals said. A recent list compiled by a pest control company placed Chicago fifth in the nation out of 15 large cities with bedbug infestations.

In all my long life I never knew there were such things as bed bugs. I knew parents said "sleep tight-dont let the bed bugs bite" but I never thought anything of it.

Oh No

Better let the Centipedes go after them. (I would have the Water Roaches take care of them, but ever since we killed their parents...I think we temporarily eradicated them....Now I should get some Mouse Poison for the mice. I'll put it in my Owl Statue and see what happens).

In most major urban cities bed bugs are a horrible epidemic. Anyone who lives in NYC knows someone who has had them. The Daily News estimated 1 in every 10 NYC households has had an experience w bb's.

The Dr. Oz show recently did an episode on bed bugs. He even showed them. Ewww! Creepy for sure.

I'm paranoid. I live in a condo complex, so I have to depend on my neighbors to be careful. Don't buy used furniture. The bugs can even get into wood. I'm always checking the beds, and we have a couple of daybeds too, so it's four mattresses. Boston's high on the list. The problem is that nothing kills the bugs, since the eco-wackos saw to it that the chemicals that were effective, were taken off the market back in the 90s.

Find out if you can get centipede eggs....

They have a good resume for killing insects, though they look butt ugly and they run very fast.

Bedbugs have been a MAJOR problem here in the Cleveland area for the past few months. I just hope there won't be a grasshopper outbreak. Those things scare me to death.

I've heard of roach motels, but a bedbug hotel? Do they check in but don't check out???

That it is. We have had numerous reports about bedbugs in our state these past few months. They have indeed confirmed that we're #1 when it comes to bedbugs.

P.S. Hey, at least we're #1 at something.

I spent a large part of my childhood catching grasshoppers and putting them in glass jars. (with holes in the lids). I don't think you need to be afraid of them!

Janice, I hear you about being paranoid. Me too. BB's are one of the key reasons I did a MAJOR recluttering. My place is easy to clean now and I use a dry steam steamer to clean. I believe in being proactive and in PREVENTION. The days of shopping in thrift shops ARE LONG GONE (over 6 years ago).

Sadly, the heavy duty chemicals don't always work that well, as the little bast*rds become resistant to them. So that might be the case with DDT. You are smart to be proactive--sadly when you live in a major urban area you have to be.
