Thumbs down Farrah Fawcett Left Off Oscars 'In Memoriam' Tribute Montage

One big name that didn't appear in the Oscars 'In Memoriam' tribute to actors and filmmakers lost in the past year was Farrah Fawcett, who died last June of cancer at the age of 62.

The segment is generally dedicated to film stars, and while Farrah was best known for her role on the television series 'Charlie's Angels,' she also lit up the big screen in movies such as 'Man of the House,' 'Dr. T and the Women' and 'The Apostle.'

Also left off the list was Bea Arthur, who died in April at the age of 86.

An Academy spokesperson told the AP, "Every year it's an unfortunate reality that we can't include everybody."

Plus, she was much better known and acclaimed for her work on TV, not just for Charlie's Angels, but challenging stuff like The Burning Bed, Extremities and Small Sacrifices. So I can understand a little why she'd be left off.

By the time Demi Moore got done talking and James Taylor started singing 1:30 had passed before the first person (Patrick Swayze) was acknowledged.
1:30 is a lot of time and several others could've been honored. If you're going to have someone introduce the in memoriam segment that's fine but say a few kind words and get on with it. I also didn't see the point of having James Taylor there, Some simple background music would've sufficed in my opinion.

Out of all the ones honored, I counted 12 I'd never heard of and those were all people from behind the scenes. The SAG awards do a much better job with their memorials than the Oscar's. As far as Farrah Fawcett is concerned, I can understand why the didn't include her since she made her mark in television and the same goes for Bea Arthur. I wasn't none-too-happy that they left out Collin Wilcox. Her performance as Mayella Ewell in To Kill a Mockingbird alone was enough to earn her recognition.

Here's the SAG in memoriam segment

I agree Charles that the SAGs do a better job, but again, when you think of it, that is the Screen ACTORS' Guild Awards, whereas the Academy represents all aspects of the Business (supposedly anyhoo), hence having to include people we might not recognize, but ones who were well known within the industry.

It is sad that they can't include everyone. In a bittersweet way, that's one of my favourite segments of any awards show. I'd rather So Andso shuts up thanking a million people individually and just say a quicky general one and leave the specifics for the Access Hollywood and the other billion interviews they do around awards time. _

Cool

Thank-you Charles for mentioning Collin Wilcox. I just recently watched "To Kill A Mockingbird" again and Collin's performance in that film was outstanding. You are absolutely correct that for that performance alone she should have been recognized and remembered.

Bea Arthur co-starred in Mame opposite Lucille Ball. But I think its just that both Farrah and Bea are most known for their work on the small screen.

Default Academy Apologizes for Farrah Fawcett Snub

It was no oversight. The executive director of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has apologized to the friends, family and fans of Farrah Fawcett, who was conspicuously omitted from Sunday night's Oscar-event tribute to Hollywood personalities who had died over the past year.

While some agents and publicists, besides actors, were included in the memorial, Fawcett, a high-profile star better known for her TV work (who also appeared on the big screen), was not. Neither was Gene Barry – who was seen in both versions of War of the Worlds – or Bea Arthur.

Among those criticizing the Academy for its selective omissions were critic Roger Ebert and Oscar-winner Jane Fonda.

In response, the Academy's Bruce Davis, who was responsible for the "in memoriam" segment (and has been since the tradition began in 1993), said late Tuesday: "There's nothing you can say to people, particularly to family members, within a day or two of the show that helps at all. They tend to be surprised and hurt, and we understand that and we're sorry for it."

While I do agree with you in some respects, if they go out of their way to honor Michael Jackson who did one movie in his career, then they can mention Farrah.

Well, my question is, did this ever happen before, (in past years) where it was widely believed some one should be included that wasn't? Is it just because Michael Jackson was included, and thats why they wondered about Farrah, and then Bea Arthur. Maybe none of them should have been included. Let them be honored at the other award/honor shows. They're not know as motion picture actors, including mega-superstar MJ.

Good point. I didn't watch the Oscars, so I didn't know MJ got a mention.

Yvonne De Carlo- she did a lot more than play Lily Munster on TV. The Ten Commandments and Death of a Scoundrel are just two of her film credits.

Extremities wasn't a TV movie.
