Exclamation "Balloon Boy" Parents Get Jail Time

"Balloon Boy" Parents Sentenced to Jail

AP FORT COLLINS, Colo. (Dec. 23) -- The parents who carried out the balloon boy hoax were sentenced to jail Wednesday and given strict probation conditions that forbid them from earning any money from the spectacle for four years.

Richard Heene was sentenced to 90 days in jail, including 60 days of work release that will let him pursue his job as a construction contractor while serving his time.

His wife, Mayumi, was sentenced to 20 days in jail.

Richard Heene choked back tears as he said he was sorry, especially to the rescue workers who chased down false reports that his 6-year-old son had floated away in a balloon on Oct. 15. It was a stunt designed to generate attention for a reality TV show.

"I do want to reiterate that I'm very, very sorry. And I want to apologize to all the rescue workers out there, and the people that got involved in the community. That's it," said Richard Heene, whose wife did not speak at the hearing.

A slap on the wrist. Seems more symbolic, yet better than nothing.

Do you any of you believe he is truly sorry?

In a word, no. I think he's arrogant and stupid enough to try some other stunt, eventually.

Good. What he did to his child was borderline abuse.

Looks like the parents still.

The wife will serve her brief sentence after the husband completes his. The courts agreed to "flexible" sentences so that the children are taken care of.

I really hateto say this, but IMO this entire thing was overblown! Fame and/or noteriety are very hard to get in this day and age, and some people are willing to do whatever it takes to get it. If you want fame these days, you have to almost go to the extreme because most people are either oblivious to what's around them or we've all "been there, done that". IMO I dont think they did anything wrong.

I love it! Serves them right and I am SO happy they won't end up getting any money out of this! If anything they'll end up broke! I hope their son realizes how crappy his parents were when he's older and resents them for it!

You can't be serious.

I'm sure a lot of people want fame and fortune but reporting that your child is in danger and wasting the hard time of law and medical officials is not the way to go at all.
