Exclamation "DC Sniper" John Muhammad Executed By Lethal Injection

Sniper John Muhammad executed

Updated: November 10, 2009

UPDATE: Convicted sniper John Allen Muhammad was executed by lethal injection tonight at 9:11 p.m. for the Oct. 9, 2002, slaying of Dean Harold Meyers, 53, a civil engineer shot in the head at a Manassas-area gasoline station where he had stopped on his way home from work. He did not make a final statement.

What follows is coverage of Muhammad’s final day:

Gov. Timothy M. Kaine has declined to intervene and stop tonight’s scheduled execution of John Allen Muhammad.

“Having carefully reviewed the petition for clemency and judicial opinions regarding this case, I find no compelling reason to set aside the sentence that was recommended by the jury and then imposed and affirmed by the courts,“ said Kaine in a prepared statement

Muhammad, 48, was sentenced to die for the Oct. 9, 2002, slaying of Dean Harold Meyers, 53, who was shot at a Manassas-area gasoline station, one of 10 people killed and three wounded by Muhammad and his accomplice, Lee Boyd Malvo.

Malvo, 17 at the time of the shootings, escaped a death sentence and is serving life without parole. The execution by injection is set for 9 p.m. at the Greensville Correctional Center near Jarratt.

Though there were 13 “sniper” victims in Virginia, Maryland and Washington, the two are believed also responsible for slayings in other states.

An undisclosed number of family members of the victims will witness the execution. According to media accounts, some area traveling from as far as Idaho and Alabama.

Jonathan Sheldon, one of Muhammad’s lawyers, noted that the U.S. Supreme Court and Kaine turned down his client.

“We respect their decisions and will make no more legal efforts to stop this process from going forward,“ he said.

Echoing a comment he made yesterday, Sheldon said, “In its effort to race John Allen Muhammad to his death before his appeals could be pursued, the state of Virginia will execute a severely mentally ill man who also suffered from Gulf War Syndrome the day before Veterans Day.“

Larry Traylor, spokesman for the Virginia Department of Corrections, said that at about 2:30 p.m. Muhammad was meeting with immediate family members and that he does not have a spiritual adviser. Muhammad’s attorneys are planning to meet with him later this afternoon, said Traylor.

Shows what kind of a coward he was since he didn't make any statement.

I bet he didn't feel any remorse at all for his horrible actions! The world will be a better place without him!

It's a shame that people who are executed can't die the same way they killed their victims. Lethal injection?? What a wuss way out. He should've been shot in the head, too. Oh, but that would be cruel and unusual punishment.

Well for me personally, I'd rather be shot in the head as opposed to lethal injection.

Being shot in the head is BANG! you're dead in a second whereas lethal injection is a whole procedure; being strapped to the gurney, putting the needle in a vein...

I know that in Russia they execute people with a shot to the back of the head. I don't know if that still goes on today.

Well, you have a point there. I didn't think of it that way. I did see "Dead Man Walking", and I'm not sure how accurate the lethal injection scene was, but I'm guessing it was pretty close. It seems that it does take a while to do the whole procedure.

I live about 50 miles from DC, and there was actually two shootings here in Fredericksburg. One person was shot at our mall a few hours after my family was there. That person survived, but still. I also remember being at the school bus stop at 7 in the morning and it being dark and wondering if anyone was out there. We couldn't go out side in PE class, or anything like that. My sister was in Marching Band and they couldn't practice outside. The football team couldn't practice outside. It really was terror because they were in a large area and were targeting everyone.

Yeah, I saw that movie too. Lethal injection could take, on average, 5-10 minutes; you are "out" once you are given the drug that knocks you out.

Being shot in the head you're dead before you know what hits you.

I live about 45 minutes from where he finally got caught. I remember that time very well. I hope he burns in Hell.

Question

Whatever happened to the electric chair? Gas chamber? Every time you hear about a death row inmate being executed, it's always via lethal injection.
