Default Got my feelings hurt.

A manager made a comment to me yesterday and it hurt my feelings and I'm still upset over it.

Yesterday morning one of the supervisors told me that this manager noticed some dust bunnies and that the windows needed to be cleaned. That supervisor told me that they didn't have anybody to clean the last few days and I don't know if that manager who noticed this stuff was told that.

So I did the sweeping then did other stuff then she called me to a shop and asked if I had swept under the T-stands or maybe moved them to get the dust bunnies. I told her I did sweep then I went to do it again just to make her happy. (This manager is a visiting manager and I think I heard she might stay at that store.)

Then I did the sweeping as she asked, but those damn bunnies just move around so much then I told her that I had done it and I hadn't been here the last few days. Then she suggested that maybe they aren't trained very well and laughed a bit.. I repeated what I said then told her that as far as I know there wasn't anybody scheduled the days I don't work.

I've been there 9 years and I know how to sweep!!

So today I go in and they have someone else sweeping the floor and I did other things.. I asked the guy who was sweeping if he usually does under the t-stands and he said he usually doesn't but he did today cause they asked it to be done.

So I am not the only one who doesn't do under t-stands...

The manager who was rude was in today so I didn't feel like talking to her...

I don't think she realized I didn't like her comment about not being very well trained.

I'm glad you spoke up for yourself. I wouldn't be too upset about it. She probably meant it more generally - and by having the other guy do it today, just means she's probably told everyone on the floor that they all have to share the responsibility. Of course dust bunnies "fly" all over the place when you sweep so everyone should be made to share the chore and stay on top of it. She probably realizes this, but doesn't realize that she hurt your feelings. Try to give her another chance. Remember, if she's new or visiting, she might be a bit nervous herself and things might come out a little "wrong".

And if not, if she does it again, tell her again and then have a dog pee on her leg.

I'm so sorry, sweetie. People can be so cruel sometimes.

Sorry this happened to you. Is there another supervisor you can talk to?

OMG, I can TOTALLY relate to this story because I have a very similar one. I think I have even mentioned it on this board, but I'll do it again as quick as possible.

I was working at McDonald's and we had this shift manager that I hated. Even my best friend thought she was a real witch. I can't remember what started this, but one afternoon I did something (unintentionally) that ticked her off . This woman told me that I wasn't good at my job and needed to be retrained. This really hurt me, since I was trying to be a good employee. My shift ended at 5pm, I think, and she ordered me to memorize this list of "6 Steps to Customer Service" and told me to relay the list to another shift manager before I left.
I was literally on the verge of tears after she tore into me like that, and thankfully it was slow enough that I could stand at the counter and memorize the list. When I finished, I knew it backwards and forewords. So my shift was about to end and the store manager came in for his shift. I asked him where the shift manager was and he told me that the guy had already left for the day. Oh man, I just knew I was going to be fired or something. So I told him what that woman had ordered me to do. He said "Oh, well, you can tell them to me".

I recited that whole list, word for word and when I finished, his face just brightened and he said "Wow, that's wonderful" and gave me all this praise. Just him saying that totally turned my day around. Otherwise I would have gone home crying. This was probably back in 1988, but I still remember it just for that very reason.

Unfortunately, there have been other instances where I've been told that I need more training. I've been fired from jobs in hotels because they don't want to bother with training anyone. It's probably partly me, but it's more likely due to the fact that when I would interview and they would see that I had taken all these hotel management classes, they would just assume that I knew everything. Sadly, that kind of management turned me off of the hotel business all together, so sometimes I feel that those hotel management classes were a waste of money. Especially since I am in the transportation business now. The fields are completely unrelated in my case.

I'm sorry this happened to you. It seems like a lot of managers these days have no people skills.

Well, I do feel better and I am over it now.

The manager was working today and it's all good.

She told me that we had a visit today by the big wigs to dust mop good and I found out later that she swept the fitting room which helped a lot because I usually do that as well.

But I am glad the other manager had my co worker sweep really good yesterday when I came in because it made it easier for me today to sweep.

EDIT: Also I think I was just mostly annoyed that they didn't have anyone to sweep when I didn't work and I didn't feel like I had to do a really good job because they didn't have someone sweep when I didn't work.

I'm sorry you had to go through that. Some people don't know how to deal with stress appropriately, or they're just born jerks. You really have to learn to not take things too personally.

Glad to hear it. It sounds similar to what I thought - that she didn't mean you didn't know how to do it, just that everyone should be pitching in to help. She might have known the big wigs were planning a visit, and they'd be looking at stuff like that. Maybe it's happened at another location she was at.

I used to go off and get mad like that, but now I try to put myself in the other person's place to see where it might have come from (and it usually is from higher up). Not everyone has really good people skills, and unfortunately, the managers in retail are often like that - otherwise they'd be making better money being a manager in an office or something.

It wouldn't surprise me at all if you find yourself on really good terms with her soon. Afterall, you were the only one who was sweeping before and she'll remember that. (You could score some huge points by mentioning that the mirrors in the fitting rooms could be cleaned more often too - and then hope she assigns that to someone else).

Sorry your feeling were hurt. Many managers think they walk on water. Just another reason why I have no intention of ever working again. I retired at 43, and I've never regretted it.
