Exclamation Massachusetts To Issue "Fat" Report Cards

State to Issue 'Fat' Report Cards
AOL / Wire Services

(April 8) -- A Massachusetts health board has voted to have public schools weigh students and include their body mass index, a measurement used to screen for obesity, on their report cards.

Massachusetts students in first, fourth, seventh and 10th grades will be weighed and the results sent home, according to The Boston Globe.

The measure follows similar efforts from Wyoming to New York City. The goal is to alert parents to a potential childhood health problem and encourage parents of overweight children to seek help for their kids.

The vote comes just days after news that a national report found one in every five American 4-year-olds is obese, with the percentages rising in minority communities.

Without intervention, the next generation "will be at very high risk" for heart disease, high blood pressure, cancers, joint diseases and other problems connected with obesity, said Dr. Glenn Flores. Flores is a pediatrics and public health professor at University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas who was not involved in the new research.

But sending such weighted numbers home on public school report cards has riled some parents.

"It's fine if you want to teach them how to eat healthy, and make better choices during health class, but I don't think giving them BMI on their report card" works, one woman told ABC News when her child's school district started the practice.

The school offered an exercise program free to the family.

"We were quite angry," she told ABC. "[It] implied that the entire family needed help. And they don't know the family's situation."

This is an issue that should be settled between the parents and the children. If the schools do want to help in this matter, then they should stop serving junk food for lunch and get some more healthier choices instead.

I can see how people can be concerned for the childs health if they are over weight but this seems a little extreme.

That would sound kind of funny but I even think sending the fat report cards is a little too much. There are some children and adults that have body chemistry and metabolism problems so that could be the case with some of the children.

Exactly. This is the same state that is forcing people to get health insurance. If they don't, they are fined/taxed as a penalty.

Massachusetts is one of the most corrupt, bureaucratic states in the country. It is getting worse and worse due to Governor Deval Patrick. Between raising the already high taxes and things like this, it is no wonder that people are leaving the state at a record rate.

I moved out of Mass 12 years ago and I don't want to go back.

I'd love to move out of this heckhole. Of course, it's our own fault for continuing to elect all these idiots like Kennedy, Kerry, Frank, Patrrick, and their ilk in the first place. Hopefully, we'll finally clean house in the next election.
