A 14 year old girl in New Jersey was arrested for posting 30 nude pictures of herself on her Myspace page. She is charged with possession and distribution of child pornography and if convicted she may have to register as a sex offender and up to 17 years in prison.
Some are outraged saying the youth is in need of help and not judicial punishment and some question if this is really considered child porn. http://news.aol.com/article/teen-arr...-pics%2F400634 |

Why would a 14 year old want to do something like this??? This is something that pedophiles look for and she would be setting herself up.

If a person is stupid enough to do that, they deserve to be arrested.

You have to realize that teenagers will do all sorts of crazy things without thinking about the consequences. It is important that adults keep better watch of their kids. |

^ True, but 14 is old enough to know better. That's just my opinion, of course.

My take on this is that this is a complicated topic...
It's been discussed before that modern technology is advancing and many people are using it for nudity and sexual images. Things are much more easier to spread around to the public today as it was years ago. I think people have to understand that, in this case, we are dealing with children. Kids don't have the same sense of judgement and mental capacity as adults do. Many kids have the "it's not going to happen to me" attitude and that can be wreckless. Some kids are mature than others, but kids don't really grasp at all what they are doing and how it can damage them. If you post nude pictures of yourself on Myspace, even if your profile is private, your photos can still get out. Those who have access to your page can copy the photos and upload them to their page and send it to others. Before you know it a photo, or in this case 30, that were meant for your boyfriend could be shown to the world in days. I don't think kids really understand this and how vulnerable they really are. The laws in this country, and elsewhere, are now going to have to work with dealing with this issue. Many of the laws on the books haven't been "updated" yet to deal with issues relating to the internet; ex. that Myspace suicide case. Personally, I think sending the girl to jail and making her sign as a sex offender is a bit too far and I really don't see a judge doing that. A fine, that she herself has to work for to pay, and counseling/guidance I think will be sufficient. |

Obviously, the first thing they need to do is cut off her internet access.

What if a 14 year old boy posted nude pictures of himself. Would the same law apply? hmmm

The laws should be the same for both sexes. Underaged kids putting nude pictures of themselves online is a bad bad thing, that could have tragic results.

and what would've happened if some paedophile had seen this online, as well as their details? the problem with some- not all teenagers is that they think they can get away with doing stupid things when it suits them and believing they will not face the consequences of their actions. and as for if a adolecent male had done the same thing, then yes he too should be arrested.

I'm going to ask the same question in this thread that somebody asked in the thread about 13-year-old Alfie's paternity test results: Where were the parents??? It irritates me that the older generations and adults always go into speeches about "the kids of today," how spoiled they are, how terrible they are, how disrespectful, etc., etc. Why don't they talk about the root of the problem: the PARENTS of today??? Maybe it's just me but it seems that more and more AND MORE parents nowadays are falling asleep at the wheel. I agree that while at 14 she did know better, she's also still a kid and probably had the mentality that a lot of teens have, that nothing bad can happen to her. Her PARENTS should have had to face legal consequences, had to pay a fine or something, right along with her in my opinion. And I think making her register as a sex offender is too much. I think a couple of months of having to spend her free time doing community service would have been plenty to get the message across. But, that's just my opinion.
