Oh No Miley Cyrus Angers Asian Community with Racist Photo

(Feb. 3) - Miley Cyrus has had her share of photo scandals in the past couple years, ranging from racy pics on her MySpace page to statements of regret over her mature photo shoot with Annie Leibowitz. Her latest scandal has angered more than parents and fans looking for a good role model - a photo of Miley and her friends pulling back their eyelids to adopt an archaic, racist caricature of Asian people has leaked to the web.

The OCA, an organization "dedicated to advancing the social, political and economic well-being of Asian Pacific Americans" sent a statement to TMZ in response to the photo. It reads, in part: "The photograph of Miley Cyrus and other individuals slanting their eyes currently circulating the Internet is offensive to the Asian Pacific American community and sets a terrible example for her many young fans. This image falls within a long and unfortunate history of people mocking and denigrating individuals of Asian descent... Not only has Miley Cyrus and the other individuals in the photograph encouraged and legitimized the taunting and mocking of people of Asian descent, she has also insulted her many Asian Pacific American fans... The inclusion of an Asian Pacific American individual in the photo does not make it acceptable." Read the entire statement on TMZ

Karen Narasaki, president of the director for the Asian American Justice Center, tells CELEBUZZ, "It's hard to imagine the context where this would be okay. It's offensive and disappointing. She's such a role model for young women."

An image search for Cyrus on Google still offers an abundance of scantily clad photographs of the young singer, many of them taken and posted by herself. Last year, after a relatively tame but partially unclothed photo shoot with famed photographer Annie Leibowitz, Cyrus released a statement saying, "I took part in a photoshoot that was supposed to be 'artistic' and now, seeing the photographs and reading the story, I feel so embarrassed."

Oh No

Don't tell me kids still do this? I thought we had gotten beyond that type of thing now.

It's not unusual, but unfortunately Miley has to realize that she's out there in the public. It's not like a typical teenager stunt. If she wants this fame and fortune, she's going to have to restrain herself somewhat from what the "typical" teenager would do. Especially doing it when cameras are around.
She wouldn't like it if Asian teenagers were mocking her southern American roots calling her a redneck or hillbilly.

Oh No

You think she would've learned after the Vogue shoot, the "racy" pictures with her friend, etc...

I have to agree. This is just getting to be immature - the girl's 16 now. It's time for her to grow up, especially when she's always in the public eye.

Oh No

WTH is up with this girl? it's as if she enjoys courting controversy for the sake of it. yet again she does something stupid as this. goes to show she still has a lot of growing up to do. and to think a lot of kids look up to someone like her... unbelievable

That's fine if you're horsing around with your friends and they totally understand what's going on. I horse with my Asian friends, as they do me frequently, but we wouldn't do it if we knew it was going to be splashed somewhere....and these days, if you're hanging out with Miley, you gotta know it's going to end up in the tabloids or on TMZ especially.

Hell, at the last company I was with, one of my best buds was Filipino and she loved to joke around, but even we knew we had to be careful because of HR and company rules that are in place now.

That's when I think she's acting like a horse's ass.
