According to Ausiello of Entertainment Weekly, Sara Gilbert has been taken off contract on The Big Bang Theory, but will continue on recurring status. She will appear on the February 9, 2009 new episode. See here :

Cool

Seems a little surprising that the writers couldn't find more stories to write about Leslie Winkle. I hope they at least come up with some good storylines for the episodes she does appear on.

I'm not surprised. They made her character hateful this season. That's been the only flaw of season 2. If they brought her back a little bit easier to handle, I'd be happy, cause I love Sara. I think she's better than the role.

Sara will be on the February 9 show, so I guess we will see where they are taking her character. I actually think recurring status is better for Leslie. The character really can only do so much.

I agree. I've been questioning the decision to add her to the main cast since it was first announced. But being as how she'll still be on the show (though not in every episode), maybe the creative team will develop some ideas for her to be more involved with the group. Movie night with the guys? Or maybe it's time Penny and Leslie went shopping together!

It's too bad they couldn't have found more things for Leslie to do. I love Sara Gilbert, but maybe recurring is for the best of the series.

I think a Leslie-Sheldon relationship could blossom sometime down the line. Or even a permanent Leslie-Leonard relationship.

Somehow, it seemed that she didn't work out as a regular but her character is better off as a recurring role.

I'm glad she wasn't. The story wouldn't have made sense to add her in. Frankly, I rather her out of the show. Her character became dislikeable in season 2.

Such a shame. There hasn't been enough of her on tv since Roseanne, except for the fairly poor sitcom Twins.

I havn't seen season 2 of Big Bang Theory as I like to wait 'til the series ends and then watch them all at once. But she was great in season 1.
