As a fan of the movie, I always wondered why the tv series decided to have only the father and add a sister instead.

I often wondered that myself.....perhaps following the trend of widowed parents on TV. "Bachelor Father" being a recent series offering and then there was "Family Affair".

In the books, the mother and sister are minor characters. Cher Papa, the second published Gidget book, is written through Gidget's father point-of-view.
