Default Robert Downey, Jr. Blames Movie For Addiction

Former troubled actor Robert Downey, Jr. blames his role in 1980s cult film Less Than Zero for fueling his drug addiction.

The 43-year-old insists he only took drugs recreationally before he was cast as a cocaine addict in the 1987 film based on the novel by Bret Easton Ellis.

Soon after completing the movie, Downey Jr's substance abuse worsened and he was jailed at California Substance Abuse Treatment Facility and State Prison, Corcoran for a year for missing mandatory court-imposed drug tests.

He says, "Until that movie I took my drugs after work and on the weekends. That changed on Less Than Zero. The role was like the ghost of Christmas Future. I became an exaggeration of the character."

I guess blaming it on something else is always easier then taking responsibility for your own actions.

You would think that playing that character would scare him straight, instead of fueling his cocaine addiction.

So, as long as you only take drugs after work and on the weekends, then you're not an addict.

That's a very good point, he sounds like he is making excuses.

I think he's joking. There's no way that is a serious remark.

I sure hope not. He sounds like he is downplaying his addiction.

It's his own fault, there are no excuses with drugs.

Same old story.

"Movies got me addicted to drugs."
"McDonalds made me fat."
"Porn gave me calluses."

After work and on the weekends is "recreational"?
What kind of parks did they have where he grew up?

Amen to that Claire. You hit it on the nose. You'd think after his so-called rehabilitation he would know better than to even say this. Makes me wonder if he is even clean now. People who have fought the demons of drug use won't try and make excuses.
