Hey folks,
I've been doing a lot of studying of the exterior shots of the Hogan Family house and trying to collaborate what I know about it... and I am pretty darned sure that after many years of searching, I've found it. 840 Bellefontaine Place, Pasadena, CA, 91105. These are the arguments I am using to base my theory: - In the season one Valerie opening, the boys are riding their bikes up the street to their house. In studying that footage you can see a) the house is the second house on the block b) the street ends at a T c) there is a lamp post with a bulbous glass top on it on the corner of the street d) there are 2 trees on the boulevard in front of the neighbors house e) the neighbors house doesn't have a drive way f) there is a tall brick stack with a lighter colored pyramid shaped decoration on the top that sits in the neighbors yard next to the sidewalk - near the lamp post g) there is little spacing between the neighbors house and the Hogan's house. h) there are cars parked next door to the neighbors house parked as though they were going up hill. i) the neighbors front yard, as well as the Hogan's front yard had brick foundational walls that ran along side the sidewalk - In the pilot episode of Valerie, the exterior shot before the second scene (where Caroline is introduced) you see a rare shot from the right side of the house. There you can see a) a fireplace b) tall shrubs near the sidewalk c) what appears to be a drive way d) the shingles are light colored as there is a part of the front of the house on the first floor that jets out which is shingled. - Also in the pilot episode, right at the beginning of the episode you're shown a wide establishing shot of the house. From that you can note that there are many trees behind the house. The two to note are a) there is a bright green, rather round looking tree on the direct opposite end of the house - positioned rather close to the house. b) behind that tree is a tall palm tree. - In close up shots you see the house numbers 840 - Jeremy Licht has gone on record to say it was located in Pasadena, CA. So I did a public record search of all the houses in Pasadena, CA with the address 840. The aforementioned address meets all the above criteria. Unfortunately, Google Maps does not have a street view available for this address BUT if you type in the address and hit street view, it will allow you to look down Bellefontaine Place - and if you do, you'll see the following: - The bulbous lamp post - exactly where it was in the Valerie opening -- right next to the brick stack in the neighbors yard with the same light colored pyramid thing on top. - The street that crosses the Hogan's street is running up hill - remember those cars that were parked up hill next to the neighbors? - There are two trees on the boulevard in front of the neighbors. There are more trees further down the boulevard just before some shrubbery; just like in that rare right side shot. - The 2nd house down is light blue in color. Its right behind the school street sign on the lamp post. - The houses have a small brick foundational wall in their front yards along side the sidewalks. If you do a satellite view - Look closely at the roof. See how there is an arch for the 2nd floor three season porch? - Also note on the right side of the house (the end closest to the driveway) there is a jet out of a fireplace - exactly where it was shown in the right side exterior shots. - The right side exterior shots also showed a decent amount of yard between the house and whatever driveway was there - the same as in this satellite shot. - There are a great amount of trees behind the house - including a few palm trees. Look closely and you'll see kitty corner from where the camera would've been placed for the wide shots there that rounded tree very closely positioned to the back corner of the house and one particularly large palm tree. - It has a western view; which makes sense when you think of how the sunlight would hit the house: in some shots from the show we see the sun is bathing the front of the house (the wide shots), other times, its tucked behind (the shots that look straight on and zoom to either the left or right first floor window). The address is 840 as well. I've run views of all the other 840's in Pasadena and nothing came close - except this. What are your thoughts? Myself, I'd say we have a winner here. Its the things we can make out in the neighbors yard and the identifiers on the roof and backyard that make this a surefire bet in my book. And actually I have just cemented the fact that it is indeed the Hogan Family house. I did a search for that address on Microsoft Live Search Maps - they give you a "Birds Eye" view which lets you see over head but at a different angle - and you get a clear cut view of the side of the house with the chimney on it. Once you see that, it will clear up any doubts.
First chance I get this summer when I'm in LA, I am going to grab a few pictures of it. :-) |

I've tried to zoom in on it but it won't let me get a closer view on it.

Use Windows Live Maps - it give you the best views of the house when using the Birds Eye view - you can view 4 different angles. The left side shows the two upstairs windows - the right side view shows the chimney.
It looks as though they've added an addition behind the house since the time they filmed the exterior shots in 1985. |
