Lightbulb It Really PAYS to Comparison Shop!

In the last week, I've come across a few startling price differences.

I called a moving company, and the guy asked me a series of questions, as to how much furniture, boxes, etc. Two days letter, I got a letter quoting a price of $1,292.50. That seemed very high, so I called another company. Same series of questions. He told me he would call me back with a price. He called back an hour later, and told me to expect to pay between $650 and $700. I know this is a good moving company, as they moved us here. I should have called them in the first place. Savings - at least $600.

The second example. I have a twin mattress, and wanted to buy a daybed frame. I was researching daybeds online for days. Really, I was dreaming daybeds, lol. I found one that I just love. One website charged $375. Not so bad, but they insist that you buy the innerspring for $359. I called, and the woman told me that the innerspring is not optional, and it won't work without it. This company also charges $109 for delivery, for a total cost of $843.

Then, I found the exact same daybed at another website, (same manufactuer, same name of bed). Their price was $369, and it includes the innerspring. Also, if I ordered that day they'd take $50 off the price, and it had FREE DELIVERY! It just kept getting better and better, lol. Total cost for the daybed was $319, for a Savings of $524.

Do you have any stories where you saved money by shopping around?

Deffinately......The worst example was the time I bought a glue gun for my woodworking, I bought the gun I wanted for $30...2 days later, another store in town had the SAME gun on sale for $15, half of what I paid for the same glue gun, just 2 days earlier!!!!!!

Mikado, that kind of stuff makes me crazy! I probably would have returned the first gun and bought the $15 one.

Janice, good job on the daybed. You gotta love a good deal.

Janice...wow. That was a great deal on the daybed! And free shipping? Free is my favorite word. lol. I'm currently trying to find some new furniture for my room, so I know how expensive it can be & how quickly it can add up. Good job on saving so much moolah!

What I usually do when I want to buy something is, I look it up on ebay first. lol. Instead of going to the mall and buying necklaces that were 30 and more, I found the same ones on ebay for like 5 bucks & I was able to get more stuff. Ebay's awesome in general for everything. lol. I just bought I Love Lucy season 3 for 15 bucks & it's in stores for $35! Eeep! =)

Thanks to the internet, I shop around for most big ticket items I buy. I hate paying retail for starters, and I don't like paying more than I have to. It's also great to be able to read reviews.

Can't think of anything specific off the top of my head though.

Can I hire you?

My story is much paler in comparison. I first found the soup to nuts I Love Lucy set at J&R for 162.99 plus NYC Tax Total $176.64. At Target in NJ it was $139.99 plus NJ Tax Total $144.89 savings of $31.75

It's not the amount that saved, it's the fact that you got it cheaper. Better that $31.75 in your pocket than in their profit margin. Good going Rich! I'll give a tiny example. My husband likes a certain kind of Dr. Scholls foot spray. I've been buying it for years at CVS for $5.99. I was at Target the other day, and they sell it for $3.74, and it wasn't on sale. He uses two cans a month, so that's a savings of $48 a year. I'll take it.

Thanks. Here's the link, Irene. They have all kinds. If I wanted, I could have ordered a trundle, which is a bed underneath, so it's really two beds. It's good for when you have a lot of company. You can also lift the trundle up and make one big bed. We saved because we already have a twin size bed, and that's what really costs. I did spend a bundle at Bed, Bath & Beyond for the linens to make it really beautiful. The daybed skirt, comforter and sham pillow cases.
