Spitzer: Budget deficit deepens by $384M

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - New York state's budget deficit is getting deeper.

That's according to the Spitzer administration, which says the state will go $384 million farther into the red because declining tax revenues in New York and a worsening economy.

To fill the projected gap, Spitzer is proposing to cut state spending on health care by 147 million dollars. The governor also wants to save 237 million dollars in reduced growth in funding for state agencies, among other cutbacks.

The new spending cuts are amendments of the state budget proposal Spitzer released last month.

The governor and legislative leaders will now try to negotiate a final budget by the April 1 start of the fiscal year.

More reason to keep the Republican State Senate Majority intact, as Joe Bruno seems to be the only thing keeping Elliot "I'm a [expletive] steamroller" Spitzer from laying waste to the state.

Does the State Deficit affect the National Deficit as well? If so, then I know why we're in such deep sh*t.
