Oh why'd you have to do this to me? Both shows are excellent - it took me 5 minutes just to think of which one I liked a little more. I went with Murphy Brown.

(When I saw this thread, I was going to avoid it, but I just couldn't resist-LOL)

Well, I've only seen a handful of Murphy Brown episodes. I generally avoid watching TV shows made after 1979. I didn't care for the episodes I've seen, I think the show sucks.

Regarding Mary Tyler Moore, when this show hit the air she had already lost her good looks and was no longer attractive. And in my humble opinion, the show was dull and poorly written. The supporting characters were dumb, and the whole thing added up to one wretched TV show. Other 70's shows equally as bad are Odd Couple, Bob Newhart, MASH, Happy Days, Barney Miller, TAXI, the list goes on. Amazing these shows were on as long as they were, there's no accounting for taste. My signature line says 50's 60's & 70's TV, but when I think back, 95 percent of 70's shows were bad, that includes all the comedys, dramas, and cop shows. The commercials aired those days were usually more entertaining than the shows themselves. From the 80's thru today, TV has just gotten worse. A few good shows from the 70's are All In The Family, Brady Bunch, and Emergency!. Welcome Back Kotter was alright until it went bad in the last season. I used to enjoy Love American Style and The Love Boat. When I try to watch those shows now, they are so bad I can't believe I used to like em. The 50's & 60's were really TV's golden age, many shows from the 50's are dated now but most 60's shows still hold up pretty well today.

Happy New Year to one and all, party hearty!

Of course I have watched all of these shows. Have you?? I doubt it. I've seen em all, from the obscure forgotten ones that lasted a few episodes to the ones still remembered today. When watching some of these 70's shows back in the day, I recall shaking my head and saying "What are these people thinking?" For the most part, incredibly cheezy stuff. But this was the 70's, the decade of shag carpets, lava lites, smiley faces and have a nice day. A couple good things about the 70's, music was good (top 40 radio was king) and in general it was a happier time. The 60's had some bad TV shows too, but bad TV in general didn't rear it's ugly head until the 70's. The best thing about 70's TV were the local syndicated stations that aired old shows from the 50's & 60's during the day, and old movies at night. In my area, there used to be a station like that. You could tune in any time of the day or night, and something good was always on. Nowadays, the major networks all air terrible shows, cable and satellite TV is loaded with hundreds of channels and there is never anything good on. Thank goodness for VHS and DVD, and recent DVD releases of some worthwhile old shows.
