In the episode "Men Will Be Boys," Andy and Albert went on a trip to prove they were men, while Charles and Jonathan secretly followed them. Albert wanted to cheat and take a shortcut, but Andy stood firm against cheating. He said he wouldn't go if it involved cheating.
I found it interesting IN THE VERY NEXT EPISODE that Andy was the class cheater with Nellie. I guess the pressure of the school marm living in your house is worse than the possibility of wild beasts chewing your head off. Of course, Nellie was the beast that was involved, so his situation wasn't an easy one. At least he felt remorse and was ashamed. It was just strange to me that both episodes involving the issue of Andy cheating were aired back-to-back. |

Yeah, I thought those two episodes put together was kind of odd, too.Andy was really being tested on his integrity or something.

LHOTP and the whole honesty issue in many instances at times got on my nerves.
I mean, you are right, the boys being out in the wilderness and Andy didn't "want to cheat"? C'mon now, this is a boy for goodness sakes! And who else other than Albert was going to know? Also, in the cheating episode regarding Nellie, WHY DIDN'T HE JUST GO AND TELL HIS MOM? I am sure his mother could have devised a way to catch Nellie on her own without straight out telling Nellie "You are cheating!" I mean, Alice did figure out in the end how to take away that sweater jacket of Nellie's to make the point that she was indeed cheating.

Sometimes children don't think and Andy was one of those people that was not thinking.

The problem that I have with "The Cheaters" episode is multi-dimensional. I could understand Nellie blackmailing Andy into stealing the exam answers. But why does Johnathan presumably take Andy out to the barn to whip him? It's been awhile since I saw this episode, but I think Andy admitting his honesty and being forced to be tutored by Nellie was punishment enough!
A question I have: What is the story that Charles tells Andy when they go fishing? Jack |

As for the beating Andy's father gave him, I am presuming since this was an era when children were regularly given "whippings" for all sorts of acts of misbehaving and maybe Jonathan didn't want Andy to think that he could get away with cheating regardless. Having your mom as your teacher put Andy at an advantage, having the answers to tests in your own home! I agree though, if it wasn't for Nellie, Andy would never have done that, but again, going merely by what era we are dealing with, parents were all abt instilling discipline to their children. |

Back in those days, parents used a switch or a belt on their kids to discipline them. It's really only since the advent of political correctness that this even became an issue.

Andy was in a no-win situation. If he keeps silent, he gets in trouble if and when his his parents find out. If he says something, then its his word against one of the prized pupils in the class, and Mrs. Garvey and Mrs. Olsen are naturally going to have a tough time believing Nellie cheats. And Mrs. Garvey was the one that approved Nellie tutoring Andy. Andy was put in an unenviable position.
