How far would you go to be near the woman of your dreams? The hit series Bosom Buddies stars Tom Hanks and Peter Scolari as ad execs Kip Wilson and Henry Desmond, who dress as "Buffy" and "Hildegarde" in order to live in the all-female Susan B. Anthony Hotel. This season, their lives get further complicated when they start a commercial production house with former boss Ruth Dunbar (Holland Taylor), along with their best friend Amy (Wendie Jo Sperber), who still has a crush on Henry. And although Kip has finally won over his beloved Sonny (Donna Dixon), he and Henry are still forced by new hotel manager Isabelle (Telma Hopkins) to change gender at moment's notice. Includes all 18 classic episodes from the show's second season, on DVD for the first time ever!

Did you notice a scene in the episode "One for You, One for Me" where Kip, Henry and their cell mates sing "Yakety Yak"? I have a feeling that scene was cut since that episode ran shorter than all the others on the Season 2 DVD (24:12). That was one of the highlights from that episode too. ` |

That scene is cut. There's a small bit of it in the closing credits. The scenes that have people singing are the most likely to be edited.

I got the DVD last week and so far I've only noticed 2 other cuts. In the episode "The Road to Monte Carlo" the part where Henry and Kip dance while they sing "Surfin' Bird" for about 8 seconds has been cut. Theres also a cut in the episode "Hildy's Dirt Nap" at the end of the funeral scene where Isabelle sings "Rock and Roll Heaven" for about 35 seconds.

To be honest, it's been a long time since I've watched "Bosom Buddies." And the only thing I remember about the show was it's theme song, My Life. So it's heartbreaking to me that it's a different theme song.
And then to hear about these edits, really bothers me. I still own both seasons, but it's not as fun to watch with all the changes. I've never seen the Yakety Yak scene, but it sounds like it was funny.

This is getting ridiculous. At first, it seemed that the music clearing monster was "forcing" actual recordings to be cut (as in the WKRP massacre), but it seems more and more that even singing a tune in a show now gets cut. While I object to any editing of shows from their original form, I can almost accept an edit that is not pivotal to the plot, but after watching the Bosom Buddies DVDs, I am not a happy camper. In "Hildy's Dirt Nap," the whole point of Isabelle bringing the agent to the funeral was to audition for him. The storyline is ruined by cutting her song. And in "One for You, One for Me," the Yakety Yak bit was significant to Kip defusing the tension in the cell. It also was a bit that made me laugh the hardest. You know when Kip will yell out his "Noooooooo!" at various times in the series? That's exactly what I did when I first watched the DVD version of that episode. Can't we have a choice? Pay a bit more to get the original versions? Wouldn't Billy Joel like the extra royalties? I encourage speaking out like in the Stop The Monster Yahoo group. Maybe boycott edited sets? What's the answer?
