The debut of TBS' "Tyler Perry's House of Payne" on Wednesday night chalked up a sitcom record for ad-supported cable in total households and various young-adult demos.
The first half-hour of "Payne" scored 5.2 million viewers, and the second half-hour notched a record 5.8 million. The second half-hour's performance also earned ad-supported cable records for demos of 18-34 (1.4 million), 18-49 (3.06 million), people 25-54 (2.985 million) and households (3.33 million). TBS has "Payne" exclusively until Fall 2008, when it will have to share the comedy with TV stations throughout the country, which have pre-bought the series and will play it at least five times a week. "Payne" deals with a curmudgeonly fire chief who presides over a multigenerational household.

I think this just goes to show you how strongly a show like this does in the African-American community. TBS 17 saw huge ratings in Atlanta when they aired this show last year, that's why they made such a huge deal to buy over 100 episodes.

Solomon, this show did more than DOUBLE of the African American comedies on The CW Mondays. Plus it grew from episode to episode, 5.21 to 5.82 million. You're right, next week is key, but it is still the highest rated sitcom ever on cable...that includes repeats of hit sitcoms like Seinfeld, etc.

I didn't see the show so I don't know if it's a good show or a bad one but I think it is good news for the sitcom. It does show that their is still an audience out there for this sort of entertainment.

This is my kind of entertainment. I hope that it does well. Ted Turner favored Perry for the deal with this show.

I finally watched the first episode over the weekend. It was On-Demand . Their were parts of it I thought were funny but all in all I thought it was mediocre. I've seen sitcoms that were a lot worst though. I probably wouldn't go out of my way to watch it .

No. I have not seen it yet. I think I said that in another post. I am just trying to be positive. Basically, I am putting my fingers in my ears so I can't hear the negative. You know, kind of like, "la la la". "I'm not listening1" I really hope that I can challenge the negative opinions after watching the show. PLEEEAAASSE let me like the show. LOL. |
