Ex-President Clinton defends bin Laden efforts
In interview, Clinton says he ‘worked hard’ to deal with al-Qaida leader
The Associated Press

In this handout photo provided by Fox News Sunday, former President Bill Clinton responds to host Chris Wallace during a taping of an interview for "Fox News Sunday" on Friday.

Updated: 11:50 a.m. PT Sept 24, 2006
NEW YORK - In a combative interview on “Fox News Sunday,” former President Clinton defended his handling of the threat posed by Osama bin Laden, saying he tried to have bin Laden killed and was attacked for his efforts by the same people who now criticize him for not doing enough.

“That’s the difference in me and some, including all of the right-wingers who are attacking me now,” Clinton said in the interview. “They ridiculed me for trying. They had eight months to try, they did not try.”

Clinton accused host Chris Wallace of a “conservative hit job” and asked: “I want to know how many people in the Bush administration you asked, ‘Why didn’t you do anything about the Cole?’ I want to know how many people you asked, ‘Why did you fire Dick Clarke?’”

He was referring to the USS Cole, attacked by terrorists in Yemen in 2000, and former White House anti-terrorism chief Richard A. Clarke.

Wallace said Sunday he was surprised by Clinton’s “conspiratorial view” of “a very non-confrontational question, ‘Did you do enough to connect the dots and go after Al Qaida?”’

“All I did was ask him a question, and I think it was a legitimate news question. I was surprised that he would conjure up that this was a hit job,” Wallace said in a telephone interview.

Clinton said he “worked hard” to try to kill bin Laden.

“We contracted with people to kill him. I got closer to killing him than anybody’s gotten since,” he said.

He told Wallace, “And you got that little smirk on your face and you think you’re so clever, but I had responsibility for trying to protect this country. I tried and I failed to get bin Laden. I regret it, but I did try and I did everything I thought I responsibly could.”

The interview was taped Friday during Clinton’s three-day Global Initiative conference.

Arrow There's that wagging finger again...

Clinton came off as thin-skinned, paranoid, overly defensive and angry. He made a fool out of himself over a simple question. Claims he was set up. He's probably still pissed about the movie, The Path To 9/11.

He rambled on and on, repeating himself. Richard Clarke, Richard Clarke, Richard Clarke!!

He seems obsessed with his legacy. Only natural I guess, considering all the scandals and his impeachment.

For those of you out there who missed it, here's a portion of the transcript:

Wallace: Mr. President, why didn't you do more to try to get bin Laden?

Clinton: Waaaaaahhh! How come you're asking ME a question and you didn't ask Bush?? Waaaaahhhhh! Did you ask Rumsfeld? Waaaaaahhh! How come you're asking ME that question It's not faaaaiiiirr!!! waaaahhhh! I want my momieeeee! waaaahhhh! It's not faaaaiiiirr!!! It's a vast right-wing conspiracy!!! waaaaahhhhh!! I want MY MOMIEEEEEEE!!!!

That'll give you some idea of the tone.

Don't forget Clinton saying to Wallace, "You got that little smirk on your face, and you think you're so clever."

Chris Wallace looked at him like Oprah looked at Tom Cruise when he was jumping on her sofa.

He finally fights back against the false charges and the accusers don't like it, unbelievable. It's about time he fought back.

FINALLY fights back?? From the Democrats' point of view, the whole purpose of the 9/11 commission was to absolve Clinton of any blame for terrorism... why do you think the Democrats just HAPPENED to select Jamie Gorelick to be on the Commission, when she should have been called as a witness, as she's the one who built 'the Wall'?

Democrats began their campaign to absolve Clinton on 9/12/01.

I expected Clinton to follow that up with nyea nyea nyea nyea nyea neyahhh!

Yes, that was hysterical! Can you imagine Bush saying that to a reporter?
Reading Clinton's words, it's sometimes hard to believe that he was actually the President of the United States for eight years! My, how well he expresses himself!

No Democrat has said a word to combat the false charges hurled against Clinton by Republicans. The 9/11 commission was to find out what happened before the attack, not to absolve anyone.

So I guess (Clinton National Security Advisor) Sandy Burger sneaking documents out of the national archives by stuffing them down his pants was the Clinton Administrations way of "getting to the truth"?

False charges? Wallace asked a simple question and a fair question.

Please name these false charges. Anytime someone says anything about Clinton that isn't favorable to his "legacy" it's automatically labled a "right wing attack"

How is it that Clinton "didn't do anything" about hitting bin Laden and al Qaeda when he tried to strike two targets where he thought he was hiding in the Middle East, and the Republicans accused him of "wagging the dog" to divert attention from his impeachment woes?

Probably because of all the years Clinton had to do something, he chose the eve of his impeachment to start bombing.

You know, that's a good point. Republicans still criticize Clinton for doing that.
