I agree with that list except for Terrell Davis. He just didn't play long enough. He only had a few good years. I don't know about Cunningham either. He was good but I'm not sure he's HOF material.

Art Monk should have been in there a long time ago. At one point, he was the all time leader in receptions.

How about Norman Julius "Boomer" Esiason, the Cincinnati Bengals quarterback in the 1980s? (He hosted Monday Night Football for a while, as well.)

Bob Hayes - receiver
Changed the way the game was played with Olympic Gold Medal speed no one could cover one on one. They had to invent the zone defense for him! |

His is a tough case. He never won anything, he played 14 years and was a four time pro-bowler. I don't think too many people thought of him as a hall of famer while he was playing. And nobody seemed to suggest, at the time he retired, that he'd be a hall of famer some day... Plus, if one asks, "is Esiason the best player (or even the best QB) who is eligible for the HOF but not in?", the answer has to be 'no'. And wow, I totally forgot that Ken Stabler isn't in the HOF yet, but it's true...he's not. I think the Football HOF committee is really screwed up. They're very secretive, but it seems that, not only do they not put guys in that should be there, but it takes them far too long to put guys in that OBVIOUSLY belong... I don't know what their problem is... Lynn Swann and John Stallworth are two examples, but there are many... Swann retires in 1982, and doesn't make the HOF until 2001???...it was ridiculous... and John Stallworth retires in 1987, but is not inducted until 2002?? Makes me wonder...did the Hall of Fame voters EVER watch a little thing call the SUPER BOWL??? There are probably a few players from the Cowboys of the 70s that should be in the HOF, but because they lost those two Super Bowls to (ahem) MY Steelers (!!), they missed out... this, of course, could be evidence that the HOF voters DID in fact, watch those Super Bowls. So SOMETHING'S SCREWED UP with these voters! And man, Ray Guy...great call there, Freshprince!! I've been hearing announcers AND coaches AND players say for the last 35+ years of watching the NFL that it's a game of field position... and who better exemplifies that than Ray Guy, the greatest punter in the history of the game? The football HOF voters are the most screwed up of any of the three major sports...it's not even close. But I also agree with Freshprince... Irvin WAS, unquestionably, a major contributor to 3 S.B. championship teams...as a wide receiveer, he was the third most important member of that great trio (with Aikman and Smith), but I think Irvin will get in eventually. I don't think Cunningham will. Gastenau was a totally dominant defensive player for the Jets in the early to mid 80s... I don't know off the top of my head how long he played, but no one could handle him when he was in his prime... The fortunes of those Jets teams he played on might have hurt his chances. Tom Brady should be in as well... yeah, I know...he's still active...but why waste time, give him a plaque now ... HOF committies have done worse! ![]() |

Jim Plunkett I was going to mention. another snubbed raider QB. He led dem 2 2 of their 3 sb's. But he got injured lots and had lots of bad records. that might hurt his chances.
