Cal Ripkin Jr. announced his retirement today. I believe you could consider hime the second-best defensive shortstop from the 80s and the last great player from that decade still playing. When he exits Yankee stadium (the Orioles finish the season in NY) it will be the end of an era. Thanks for the great memories.

Cal is one of the few baseball players who played during the 90's that played because he had 'love of the game'. He has respect for the game of baseball, and the fans. It is amazing that he stayed with one team through out his entire career. I will actually get an opportunity to see him play in a few months, and I look forward to every second of it! He will be missed by baseball fans everywhere.

Cal Ripken, Jr. was one of the prototype shortstops which lead to all the power hitting shortstops of today like Jeter, A-Rod, and Nomar. A great career and a first ballot Hall of Famer!

Last great player from the 80's though? I think there are plenty of them, Greg Maddux comes to mind.... McGwire and Bonds played in the 80's.
