Yup! And they're not as bad as everyone thinks... You can't eat apples, gum or anything really sticky or hard, like caramel apples. They might hurt for just a little bit like a few days after you get them on, but after a while you usually forget about 'em. They're not that bad at all... I'm crossing my fingers to get mine off in four months!

When I had them, I chewed gum and had peanut butter all the time. Nothing happened to the braces... THey are really hard to clean around and when I got them off, I had 9 cavities, plus all these marks (dentist bills skyrocketed...mom loved it!)

I finally got mine off But when i had mine on I couldn't chew regular gum( sugar free only) , i could only drink soft dinks that were diet only. Umm, i coulodn't drink anything with citric acid, like lemonade and stuff like that, and all that other hard stuff your not supposed to eat. They didn't hurt me except for a few days after I got 'em and sometimes when I got them tightened(sp)

Well i got them off 2 weeks ago... I drank soda, chewed gum, ate caramel canies, ate apples, and ate everything, inclusing nuts. I also chewed on ice... twice my braces fell of but once was, it just wasnt oin tight, and the other was from chewing my pens, and i always forgot too brush. I have 2 itty bitty cavaties and really white teeth. It hurts after there tightened but screaming obsenities about your dentist helps. I always do the opposite the dentist said, and it worked! Im such a devil! OH well, too me, i just made like the braces werent even there!

I don't know for sure but I would suspect that it might be that since you might not be able to clean your teeth as well, you will not be able to necessarily get all the acid off and they don't want your teeth to rot.

Basically, I was also able to eat many things that they tell you not to. I think they go overboard just to be on the safe side. But you should be careful the first time you try to eat something they tell you not too. Take it slow, and see how things go before you just devour it. And I would recommend to NOT eat caramel, Double Bubble or Bazooka gum (or any other really sticky gum). Basically, the sticky stuff is your worst enemy, because it will get stuck between your braces and will be hard to get out and will be irritating and bad for your teeth.

I also agree that braces aren't too bad. The only time they really hurt is sometimes after you get them tightened. Also, I had some trouble with mine cutting my gums occasionally, which was kind of painful. They gave me wax to put over the sharp edges so they wouldn't cut.

But it has been a very long time since I had braces. Are they even still made of metal anymore, or do they use plastic now?

How come all the braces topics always come up right when I had mine tightened? They hurt like hell today. But normally they don't, just to let you know. When I first got them, my mouth felt kinda stiff and it was awkward eating, but you get used to it. I pretty much eat whatever I feel like, even if it's on the no-no list (if I went by that, I'd be starving). I eat popcorn daily, I chew gum all the time. I don't eat caramel candies, but that's just 'cause I don't like them. I eat taffy, though, sometimes. But I wouldn't recommend doing that =)

I have braced til the year 2004. EEEKK! I used to do everything that I wasn't supposed to, then I met Jay-Harrington-Look-A-Like. JHLAL for short. He told me to stop chewing gum, and he looked so much like Teddy, I did stop. Now, he left for California. So, no more JHLAL!
As for being sore, I was fine. Just talk alot and chew stuff and get your jaw muscles worked out and you'll be fine.

I had braces for a year. My sister just got her's off and her teeth look so much better. Mine didn't change all that much.
