The show is about a mother(Valerie Harper) raising her three teenage sons(<David>Jason Bateman, the oldest and the man of the house, <Mark> Jeremy Licht and <Willie> Danny Ponce, who were fraternal twins but complete opposites. Mark was the intellectual(nerd) and Willie was the fun loving one--who also cared less for school than Mark. Then again, most people don't usually like school as much as Mark did!) Valerie most of the time was by herself because her husband Mike(Josh Taylor)was an airplane pilot and out of town most of the time. In the later seasons(when Valerie "dies" in a car accident), Aunt Sandy(Sandy Duncan)-who had just gotten a divorce takes over and moves in with them--as a new mother figure. She was a school counselor at David's high school. When Sandy joined the cast, Michael Hogan(the father) spent more time at home. Mrs. Poole was their neighbor who always came in without knocking! She was the 'perfect' neighbor. Always there to help and anything you asked, she could do it. A little annoying to some, though! In the last season, John Hillerman(Magnum, P.I.) joined the cast as Mike and Sandy's dad. He was not the best move this show made.

There's a full description on the main site for the Hogan Family under show history.
