Smile Gerard vs. Hogan, death

Never saw this series but(having rediscovered VH's charms on TMTMS on Nick at Nite)wish I had. Two questions:

1. I don't really care whether or not Mrs. Hogan was "a lot closer [than Rhoda Morgenstern Gerard Rousseau] to who Valerie Harper is" (the comment attributed to VH at the beginning of this series). More to the point, she was what Rhoda should have become. Don't you agree?

2. How did Mrs. Hogan die?

not only did she die of an automobile accident, but the family got over it in one episode!

One episode? Not even that pal, not even that. The same episode that fans were told Valerie had died we were graced with a blindfolded Mark and the twins throwing food at each other. And they called that comedy? What a stinker of an episode...
