Woman gets 30 days for poisoning neighbor's cats
Friday, April 7, 2006

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

TACOMA -- A Spanaway woman was sentenced Thursday to 30 days in jail and 30 days of community service for killing her neighbor's three cats with a meal of antifreeze-soaked chicken.

Pierce County prosecutors said Donna Clark, 42, placed the deadly mix in her back yard in May.

Joe Ashbaugh's cats, Billy, Topper and Kiki, ate the poisonous meal and died.

Prosecutors originally charged Clark with felony first-degree animal cruelty. That charge was eventually reduced to a misdemeanor -- poisoning animals -- and Clark pleaded guilty to that.

Prosecutors said they couldn't prove Clark intended to cause suffering or knew the cats would be fatally poisoned.

Superior Court Judge Kathryn Nelson ordered Clark taken directly to jail after sentencing.

"Even though this is a misdemeanor, this is serious, and you need to be held accountable for this grievous act," the judge said.

"And I frankly am not persuaded that you understand the full extent of what you did, and you will serve jail time," the judge said.

Ashbaugh said he wasn't happy with the plea deal, and Clark could have been convicted of a felony.

Say what??? What did she think antifreeze does, makes them stronger?? That's the dumbest thing I have ever heard.

I wonder what her excuse was...their barking was keeping her up at night?

I think the sentence is too light...those kitties were part of someone's FAMILY. Give that six months, at the least.

Cats do meow, often loudly. They were probably also using her back yard as a litter box and leaving her "presents" on her front door and stuff. That's what my neighbor's cats used to do before we finally complained to him enough and sent the animal officer to talk to him.

Still, I think poisoning them was pretty cruel, but maybe they annoyed her enough and she was just trying to prove a point and didn't mean to kill them.

I agree, cats can be pretty destructive if they're not trained properly. IMO cats should be kept in the house and not allowed to roam freely outside. There are so many diseases and stuff that they can catch and bring home. The neighbor didn't have to go to such extremes though, she could have done what you guys did and complained to the animal police and let them handle it.

I work at a Vet clinic and am currently working on my degree as a Vet Tech, so I see stuff like this a lot, but it still breaks my heart.

I think the woman probably had good reason to do what she did, but she shouldn't have went that extreme. All she needed to do was get a pot of water boiling or some black pepper, and she wouldn't have to worry about a thing. We do it all the time.
