I wonder how much hairspray Marlo had to use to maintain that flip. I understand that her hair was the most important entity on the "That Girl" set (according to Barry Williams, who once guest-starred).

Yes. Marlo Thomas' hair was the most memorable thing about her character: That 1960's flip. She never changed it for the first four years, no matter what. There is a little nitpick that she tells about her hair: It seems that in the first season (1966-1967), that was her own hair and no hair took a beating that that hair took and it had gotten so that she didn't have hair. It was just hanging there and she started to wear falls. She wanted her bangs to grow out, but Clairol, her sponsor, considered that a no-no, so she wore a bangs wig, so that she would have bangs on the show and let her hair grow out in real life.

That's funny about Marlo's hair! I remember my aunt wearing these huge rollers in order to achieve that same flip in the '60's. We all thought she was gorgeous! She's still gorgeous at 50 yrs old.

I tell you, Marlo really affected my perception of beauty! That flip hairdo of hers was such a cool hairstyle that never quite looked as good on anyone else! I was born a year after the show began, but even as a kid, I remember trying to get my mom to style her hair in that flip! When I started school, I was determined that my girlfried had to look like Ann Marie, or Julia or Julie (from The Mod Squad)! Tv really made me idealistic huh?

Has anybody noticed that in recent years, she has a toned-down version of the old flip? And did anyone see her in that episode of "Friends" where Jennifer Anniston suggested that she copy *her* do in order to be more like her daughter?
Just my own two cents. ![]() |

That flip of hers really made the show. People tuned in in droves. She was so pretty back then. I saw her on the Friends show too. She got to kiss that hunk!

Her two most noticeable characteristics were her hair and voice. She appeared in one episode of Friends as Rachel's mother, while she looks a little different from the 60s, her voice is still the same after all of these years. I can recognize that voice anywhere.

And those eyes!! She has the most gorgeous eyes!! I often wonder how much mascara she had on!! btw--I saw her one night this week in a Lifetime Movie--sorry I don't remember the name of it. Was about a couple who'd lost their little boy and Marlo's character kept seeing him come back in spirit and would talk to him. She had not change a bit! |
