LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Mickey Rooney and Dick Van Dyke are plotting their return to studio films, playing villains in the Ben Stiller family movie "Night at the Museum."
Rooney and Van Dyke, along with Bill Cobbs ("I Still Know What You Did Last Summer"), will play security guards at the Museum of Natural History on the same detail as Stiller's night watchman. Stiller's character discovers a magical pharaoh's tablet, but Van Dyke, playing the head of security who has worked at the museum for nearly 50 years, wants the tablet so that he can stay young. Rooney is his colleague who, with Cobbs, helps Van Dyke's character with his nefarious schemes. Van Dyke's last appearance in a feature film was in 1990's "Dick Tracy." He has spent the past 15 years working on "Diagnosis Murder" and its related TV movies. The actor also lends his voice to the upcoming cartoon "Curious George." Rooney's last studio movie was 1998's "Babe: Pig in the City." He first appeared onscreen in 1926 and was at one time the world's biggest movie star, starring in the "Andy Hardy" films and "National Velvet." "Museum," which is a big budget, live-action/computer-animated comedy, is scheduled to begin shooting next month in Vancouver and is slated for a holiday release via Fox. Shawn Levy ("The Pink Panther") is directing. |

Stiller movies are hit or miss for me. Either very funny or incredibly tasteless.
Let's hope that the script is worthy of Dick and Mickey's talents and doesn't reduce them to using 4 letter words or making sex jokes to get a laugh.

Robin Williams has joined the cast. He'll play Teddy Roosevelt, brought back to life in the museum he helped to found.
I think it's great that current-day stars like Ben Stiller and Robin Williams would be in a movie with legends like Dick Van Dyke and Mickey Rooney. The only thing better for me would be if Jim Carrey were to appear with Dick (it's obvious from Jim Carrey's work that Dick was an influence). |
