October 2005 Dear Friends: There are no words to express the overwhelming joy and gratitude I feel in my heart right now. In cooperation with the Santa Cruz SPCA, the Doris Day Animal Foundation has been given the opportunity to airlift 130 dogs and cats out of several overcrowded Louisiana shelters. Our rescue mission is called OPERATION JUST PAWS. These precious angels are the silent victims of Hurricane Katrina and I’m so grateful that we can contribute to this humanitarian effort. These animals were literally hours away from being euthanized when we heard of their plight. Many of them are sickly and in desperate need of medical attention. They will be airlifted to California’s Central Coast and sheltered by the Santa Cruz SPCA. Medical help has been promised by two very compassionate veterinarians. Initial veterinary care, including a comprehensive exam and treatment plan for each animal, will be provided free of charge by Dr. Jennifer Condreay. Dr.Todd Lawmaster will provide free spaying and neutering along with medication and supplies donated by the manufacturers. When they are ready for adoption our orphans will be placed in foster care or permanent homes – and this website will bring you photographs and information so you can get to know them and share the joy of finding them loving homes. With your help, my loving supporters and fans, we will be able to accomplish this rescue mission. We have rescued and found homes for hundreds of animals over the past 28 years – but never so many at one time!! We began as a small, local group in the greater Los Angeles area in 1977 and we accomplished a tremendous amount of good work in those early years. When I moved to the Central Coast in 1981 we focused our efforts in that area and again, we made a real difference in the lives of many homeless animals. And now here we are, all these years later, still working together to help the precious four-leggers. Many, many of you have been with us since those early days and for that, I am forever grateful. You know that my heart belongs to the animals and I am dedicated to making this world a better place for them. OPERATION JUST PAWS is an extraordinary opportunity to turn tragedy into triumph. Together we will continue to make our dream a reality. With my love and appreciation, Doris Day |
