Anyone ever met in person someone they have traded with? - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

I've never met anyone I've traded with but over the years, I have met several people (at least 30+) that I first met online in other hobbyist fora (cooking/espresso) that I have belonged to.

Twice I have had traders visit me. They wanted to pay me a visit. I was relutlent at first, as I had a big collection, and they had a small one. So was never sure on what there true intensions were.

It became akwards as they were both after lots of sets from me on a constant basis, and never had anything to trade. When the idea that they should pay for them, like everybody else did, I got frowned at.
They seemed to think that just beacuse they met me once, that I would give my sets away freely.

Long story short, I havent seen them in months. Which is probally for the best.

I also had one trader phone me up from America to England every few weeks, to arrange a trade over the phone.
He paid for the call, so we did a few trades, before he started ripping people off.

I tried to meet a trader who lived 15 miles from me once. I had done over 30 trades with the guy, and the parcels were big, so it would have been cheaper to collect than post. But every occasion I mentioned it, I got shot down, and ultimatly, he did not want any visitors. Then he started ripping people off as well, so I stopped trading with him.

It is intresting to meet a trader, but check them out first. I've always been worried that they would be checking out my place for alarms etc, so that they could rob it later.

Why would you choose to meet someone at your own place? Why not set up a meeting at a neutral location. Ask them what they want - you each bring what you agreed to bring - End of story.

I have met a few traders in person
but not the way u r talking about
i met 2 people at sci fi convention (YES I AM A GEEK, but my boys wanted to go)
anyhow, i met 2 traders there that i bought some sets from
and it turns out they live like 30 minutes away
so whenever we swap we meet somewhere and just swap in person
they are not on the board, and we do not trade much
but that is about it

they had my address from earlier trades, and they drove up to see me without much warning.
Suposably they were up here visiting friends or on buisness etc. And decided to stop by. They finalized the visit by saying that they would drop off my part of the current trade i had with them, as they were visiting. Giving a reason for them to visit.

Given the option, i would have liked to have met them else-where, but it just never became possible.

I tried to stop it, and i really got angry when they saw my collection on display, and started taking photographs with their phones. They each took at least one before I got them to stop.

Don't get me wrong, I like to meet new traders, and I'm hoping that the next one I meet is a hot female trader who's single. But that simply hasant happened yet!

I've met a number of folks I started trading with. A couple of my oldest and best friends started out as trading partners. I just recently stumbled across someone I knew back in the '80s, through a print forum trading group. Back then, it wasn't uncommon to form friendships with the folks you traded with, meet for drinks if you were in town, etc. Haven't done it in a while, though.

And not to out-geek anyone, not only have I met trading partneres at SF conventions, I've met them at SF conventions one or both of us actually ran ... :>

I've had similar experiences as Ku7uk. While I don't sell, I don't appreciate being used either. A bartering system would work best but it seems that unless you understand the expenses of it all, most people in general are rather presumptuous.

Where to draw the line is my difficulty. My husband tells me not share information about our stash of goodies, but it's pretty tough when you've just gotten something super rare in your mail that day.

Jen you don;t have to put everything your list. If you have some goodies, keep some off the list if it's really super super rare. Unless it's "checking in"-lol

Lots of times, with folks from all over North America and Europe. Probably wouldn't do it with someone who I trade with only once, but with regular contacts who share lots of similar interests, it's always been a pleasure.

Sure have, as I'm a member of a old time radio, early tv group and with everyone's name and address is in the database as we do distributions, many of our members meet in the areas they live in.

About 5 mos. ago Agent 13(Jen) was having some burner problems and introduced me to a chap who also resides in Brooklyn to me as she traded with both of us. We became good friends and I am in his house or he is in mine at least twice a week. He doesn't get much stuff as he rarely trades or looks to trade and gets very little but I am thrilled to GIVE him anything of mine that he wants to copy and he returns it the next day.

Why am I so glad to have him copy anything of mine that he wants?, simply because there is no better backup sytem. We all have on occasion burned a disk and the next time we tried to burn it, there was a read error. Now you email someone, hope they read it that day, if not the next, respond and then send a replacement the next day. If so, you are looking at a 5 day turn around with three days in the mail. With me and Paul it's a phone call, a 5 minute drive and boffo I got the disk I need. Everyone should have a buddy close by.

Tomorrow Paul and myself are going to a old time radio convention in Newark,
with a whole bunch of panels and guests including Soupy sales, my hero when in college, Larry Storch, he of Coporal Agarn in F-Troop, Fred Foy, that great voice who spoke those immortal lines"From out of the past comes the great horse Silver, the Lone Ranger rides again." and Hal Stone who played Jughead Jones to Archie Andrews for so many years on radio. Can't wait.

I agree! I have an "internet friend" I send alot of things to because I know she will enjoy them. And although I'm terribly anal and normally keep at least 2-3 copies of my DVDs to have as backup, I figure if I can't recover something she has a copy of, then I can ask her to send a copy.

I guess if youve known a trader for a while a year at least its ok to have them visit you. But of course they should ask and arrange a time. Not just turn up out of the blue.
