RE Charlie Chan,

which collection do you have b/c there is a lot of crap out there.

I have all of the chan films 1 film to a disc from either Digitally captured Restored Elements or actual 16mm prints (which I own or had access to that were transcribed to dvd)

Let me know
Tom

there are a bunch of collections out there that are not worth more than a toss to a trash can.

Lamont,

I hate to tell you but they are junk compared to what's out there and I don't mean this in an unkind way. That set was made up by the same bootleggers who used to do a crappy Amos/Andy set. Charlie Chan quality should be:

1. First 20 plus Fox Produced Films (Including film Behind That Curtain) have been restored and were broadcast digitally in Uncut Quality< I have them captured to dvd that way.

2. 6 of the Monogram Chans were released by MGM last year in a box set that is superb.

3. The Final 11 or so Monograms can only be had from 16mm film prints uncut which I have either owning the actual film print or borrowed and had them put onto dvd.

4. Former Lost film The Black Camel I have on dvd in its full Run Time from AMC Cable tv back during its ONLY Television broadcast. It was remastered via studio grade equipment by a fellow film enthusiast. This is the ONLY copy worth getting of this film, no other complete elements exist.

5. First Four Sound Chan films are lost forever in a Fox Studio Fire in New Jersey some time ago.

The reason I am more adamant about this series is that this is what got me into tape trading was old and obscure rare films which comprises about 50% of my very large collection. Charlie Chan films are the "godfathers" of this genre and I know every inch of every movie so to speak. The set you have is well known by folks at CharlieChan.net and is generally despised.

Point being, there are much better copies available of those 42 films.

Again, this is informational and opinion coming from a perfectionist with regard to these films.

And I would put the rating of that 14 disc set more like 6 out of 10 when you see what they look like 1 to a disc from the sources I quote above.

Tom

Don't shortchange yourself yet, Lamont. I have almost all of the Charlie Chans movies, with just one movie per disc, but to tell you the truth, if I could have gotten ALL of them on 14 discs and the quality was decent, I would have gone that route. One 60-65 minute movie per disc seems like overkill to me. It's a waste of space when two per disc would have been plenty watchable.

Jen,

Not trying to be a jerk here, but this is a subject that is a particular passion of mine and I AGREE with you that if you had 2 to a disc and they were done correctly, all would be well, but the 3 to a disc set that Lamont is talking about is the problem. Too many times these movies are sold on ebay as Extremely rare and a lot of people are buying it when these movies can be found quite easily in excellent condition. Jen, I think I gave you some Chans once upon a time and trust me if you saw that 3 movie to a disc set, you would understand why this subject is a pet peeve of mine, they are downright horrid on some movies compared to what you can get.

Lamont, not trying to insinuate anything is wrong with you at all, it is the set that you got that is really the issue. Whoever originally put that out is a real "bloodsucker" in my opinion, they threw together something that they could sell for big bucks on ebay/amazon, etc. and they basically preyed upon everyday film buffs and collectors, that is what burns me up to high ......

Look, I have no problem with folks either selling public domain films that they remastered themselves or selling old movies that the studios are too "Stupid" to realize are money makers, but I do have a problem with people putting out an inferior product and calling it excellent and rare when the product really does exist elsewhere in that condition.

As I always say, to each his own, but this cat will take quality over quantity at any time and to me , what is another disc, easy storage in my opinon.

i agree with tdubel on this one....

the sets i have are 1 movie to dvd ... that's the way they were made for me back in the day .... i know thequality difference as well .. if someone wants to squeeze them on fewer dvds ,.. by all means ... some even have the skill to keep quality ... but these are movies ,.. not episodes we are talking here .... how many movies are made into double or tripple features ...lol

i take pride in my old movies ... why ? i actually watched all of them ... and know there are no glitches ....

if i trade for old movies ... i rather get them 1 per dvd,.. i have boston blackie squeezed on a few dvds ... i would have loved getting that 1 per ... just don't have $10 per dvd to throw around.

yamean ? ... lol

btw: i too have the Charlie Chan 40 movies ... nice quality taken from my commercial vhs tapes ... 16 mm film ... and turner i believe.

the silent movie ... i did not want
and the spanish movie i also did not want .

i hope someone , one day get the lost movies
