Anyone know about the "Curse of Tecumseh?" I learned about it in my history class. It is something I never thought about in all the years I was learning U.S. history. Here is what it is for the uninformed.
It started when future U.S. President William Henry Harrison captured and killed Tecumseh, an Indian who tried to gather support from other Native Americans to fight westward expansion. Tecumseh had been very elusive and the more he dodged U.S. efforts to capture him, the more motivated the Native Americans became. Harrison, with the help of others, finally got him. But years later it set off a chain of odd and tragic coincidences that would plague U.S. Presidents for more than a century. 1840 - William Henry Harrison is elected. The 69 year old President gave his inaugural address in the rain for a few hours. He would contract pneumonia and die after only a month in office. 1860 - Abraham Lincoln is elected President. He would be assassinated by John Wilkes Booth a few years later in office. 1880 - James Garfield is elected and would be assassinated and die in office. 1900 - William McKinley is re-elected President but is killed by an assassin. 1920 - Warren Harding is elected but dies in his short term in office. 1940 - FDR is elected President for a third time. After he is elected for the fourth time, he dies of a cerebral hemmorage. 1960 - JFK is elected. In 1963, we all know his sad story. 1980 - President Reagan is elected President. He is shot and seriously wounded by a crazy man named Hinckley but he survives and serves a second term in office. By doing this, he had broken the curse. |

I knew there was a 20 year curse, I didn't realize it was supposedly started by Tecumseh. We talked about it in history, too when I was in school. No one was sure though if Reagan broke the curse or if the failed attempt would carry on, but so far it seems broken. Still a very odd series of events.
Side note, Tecumseh was from Ohio.

![]() ps. Tecumseh should be given the credit ( along with Gen Brock ) as the saviour of Canada, his actions during the war of 1812 staved off the American invaders till 1813 by which time both sides were tiring of the conflict and ready to talk a peaceful truce* ( though, it took another year to happen ) * that, with some cracks , has held up to the present time, thankfully, for the people of both Canada and the USA < Peace is best!!! |

That election also had the famous slogan of Tippecanoe and Tyler too. Tippecanoe being the battle where Harrison beat Tecumseh and John Tyler being the Vice Presidential candidate. |

Ohio is an Iroquois word, so I guess that leads us to who named it... was it Ohio when the Indians were here? |

Tecumseh was killed 2 years later in the battle of the Thames during the war of 1812, a true hero of Canada and his people. |

You are right. I didn't mean to insult the Canadian hero that is Tecumseh. |

It's always better to think of it as a curse than just some conincedences. So I vote curse. |

...and Bush hasn't even had an attempt. I'm sure he feels left out.

Well, the Supreme Court technically made him president, so maybe it doesn't count that he was elected. ![]() |
