Question Amos and Andy DVDs on Amazon

I'm confused here. Sitcomsonline and Tvshowsondvd make no mention of Amos and Andy being released on DVD. Yet amazon.com has several sets. Are these legitimate and legal?

There has been no official release of this series on Dvd & it's highly unlikely there ever will be. The ones that are being offered on Amazon, Ebay, etc... are bootlegs. You can find several variations on Ebay for around 50.00 or less but beware of sellers hawking their dvd sets & advertising them as 74 episodes or more. Most sets will include the 2 Amos & Andy cartoons & the introduction of the cast but these are often described as episodes & they're not. 78 episodes were filmed & 72 have been found & are widely available. You can pick up a dvd set for under 50.00 on Ebay but just make sure it includes the recently discovered lost episode "Andy Get's Married" If you prefer to wait for an official release, I regret to say that you're in for a long wait.

CBS owns the rights and they have all of the 35mm negatives and prints. They withdrew the show from all distribution in 1966 and have not shown any indication of a willingness to ever let it see the light of day again. Any DVDs you see are made from film prints that have wound up in collector's hands and been transferred. As was previously stated, 6 episodes have not shown up on the collectors market.

If CBS owns the rights, then that means Viacom owns it right???

I also wish that somebody would release Beulah. I'm sure it hasn't been seen on television since the 50s. I have seen one episode of this show, and I thought it was pretty good.

This show is great, they play it on TV each week down here on the local community channel,i don't get a good reception on that channel,so don't no how the quality is. I'll have to find out where they get it.

A year ago I probably would've said go for it but now you can get nice quality sets really cheap on Ebay. Here's one now with a bid of only one cent and only 7 hours left & It has the Andy Gets Married episode. Looks like a decent enough set to me.
