For a few years between 1999-2002 me and my sisters went to Pine Hills day camp. Since I have CHARGE (that's something you have when you're half deaf and half blind) people were total biatches to me! They'd make fun of me, lie to get me in trouble, leave me out, gang up on me, and oh so much much more but I don't have all night to make a list. And even the teachers were mean to me.....I was like that Dave Pelzer boy (in "A child called it") only I was "abused" (not physically) by kids and teachers at PH daycamp
![]() And one time when I was about 9 or 10 this one girl lied about something I said.....she said that I was making fun of her Dad that he ran away and when I got home my parents whipped me for a while. Now they're sorry, but still. Anyway, PH daycamp was the worst thing that has ever happened to me in my whole entire life! I don't understand why I can't be treated normally just because I have CHARGE and I look funny. The reason why I just brought this up is because last week when I was helping out for this Vacation bible school thing that was at PH daycamp the kids were being kinda mean to me. Like they'd purposly spill their drinks and laugh so I'd have to clean it up.

Stand up for yourself. People pick on you because you're an easy target. You just stand there and take it. Tell them to leave you the heck alone and refuse to clean up their drinks. If that doesn't work, let it roll off your back. In about ten years, you'll be able to laugh at them. It's called karma.

Exactly - don't take their crap Nik. THEY are the ignorant ones. Kids can be so bloody cruel. I really thought over the years parents and society instilled in their kids that having certain disabilities or differences isn't something you make fun of.
I don't know why kids feel its makes them look cool or better to put someone down. If it helps at all, it does get better as you get older. They should mature as well and they stop that sort of thing. You'll always have jerks - you've just got to realize that it's THEM with the problem and not you. I think girls are particularly bad - especially at your age.

Tell them off. Sounds like they deserve it.

I think you should leave PH Camp. Why help out there when you know that you're going to be bullied?

when people make fun of you, you have to do something. you can tell an adult so they can care of it for you. tell them that you're better than them and comment how immature and lame they are for making fun of someone for a disability. and don't clean up their drinks or do anything they tell you to. just tell them to **** off and shut the **** up. in my freshman year, a girl at school who kept throwing **** at me and calling me a whore pushed me when i was getting a drink from the water fountain, so i kept the water in my mouth and spat it out in her hair while she was getting a drink. she was so grossed out and she ran to the locker room like a drama queen to wash her hair. after that incident she realized i can fight back and toned down a bit on harassing me. those kids honestly sound pathetic and stupid, and standing up for yourself can only have positive consequences. |

You msut stand up for yourself... or tell a trusted adult. I live with an abusive father, and the reason why he CAN abuse me, is because I ALLOW him to. I've refused to tell the authorities for HIS sake.... so...??? It's your choice. Are you going to do something about it? Or sit back and take crap from everyone? ![]() |

Tell those kids to clean up after themseves!
I agree with everyone when they say stand up for yourself. Why on earth would those adults at the camp treat kids that way??????? I'd report them. I love kids, but mean ones, well, it starts with the parents! Keep your head up!

Ever get the feeling that instead of going forward with things, we're really reverting back to caveman days? Parents that don't teach their kids that people with disabilities are the same as people without them are terrible, horrid parents who should be written up just like any people that beat their kids.

I think you should either ignore them, Nik, or tell somebody about it. If you told your parents how they acted, surely they would allow you to leave?
One thing that I sometimes did was to act very strangely if people were bothering me, so hopefully they'd give up and go away. I'd start talking to people who weren't there, and give them a "mad Doc Brown stare". I think in a situation like this, it's always best to act in a way that the others least expect. That way, you have the advantage because they'll be surprised and taken aback. So I'd advise you not to act in a way they'd expect you to...act in a way they'd never expect. I suppose another thing you could do is pretend to cry. Unless the kids are intending to really make you upset, then pretending to cry might cause them to back off. It may just be that they're hoping to annoy you, but not upset you too much. I don't know.

I appreaciate all your comments
![]() I use to tell an adult when I was at PH daycamp (but luckily I don't go there anymore) but the adults care at all. They were almost as mean as the kids! I tried to tell my parents, but they just thought I was a troublemaker since the kids would lie all the time about things I really didn't do. Oh, and about last week at VBS (luckily it was just last week, one week) it just happened one day--Friday, the last day. I didn't tell because I wasn't tottally possitive if they did it on purpose, but I'm pretty sure they did. I just didn't feel like telling cause it would just cause trouble. Plus, my sister Jasmine was there and she'd be so embarassed if I told and probably would tell my parents. Sorry to complain about it, it was just a really hard time.. |

In grades K-6 I was always picked on because I was the shy loner who always cried about everything. I wasn't a cry-baby, but I was just so emotional- and then them making fun of me and leaving me out of everything didn't help. Finally I switched to a pubic school for grades 7-8 and it was the best years of my life.
Anyway, don't listen to those people. You're a lot better than them, not to mention the bigger person. I know a lot of people who would have just snapped and hit them or something. Don't worry- someday they'll get what's coming to them. I'll go beat 'em up for you! ![]()

I had this same problem in 6th grade...I stood up for myself a little but not much. Last year it happened sometimes too, but not as much. And also leave this camp. If your parents dont want you to, then tell them all of the troubles you've been going through. And if they still belive those kids instead of you, I hate to say it, but you've got some crappy parents. |
