Default Corrupt DVDs: any traders do this?

I was just reading some posts here and saw a few mentions in various threads about receiving corrupt dvds. Does anyone here check each dvd they make to ensure that it is not corrupt before sending to someone else?

I always do this, by running the disc in my player at fast forward speed. Not too fast as I don't want it to totally skip over any potential bad segments, not too slow that it takes too long, just so it takes about 10-12 minutes to go through a SP disc. I don't sit there and watch it, I go about doing "whatever" while it plays. But if when I come back to it, it's frozen-up instead of finished, I toss it and re-burn while I still have the files on my computer. I didn't always do this, but have for a long time and it works great. I don't think I've had a single complaint about one of my discs since. Admittedly, I do it for my own sake as much as the other person's: I find it easier and cheaper to check, and re-do if necessary, than to replace them after the fact, which I always found to be a hassle.

While I've gotten plenty of bad discs, I've not run into anyone who won't replace them, which is good. Even still, it is disappointing to get corrupt dvds. You wait for something, it finally comes and you want to watch it, but... no. Another 2 week wait...

As a related aside, assuming that most people will re-do discs that won't play, does anyone replace discs that do play, but won't copy? That has not been my policy, but what about others?

interesting question about the copy idea

all the discs that i have in my collection, have been copied at one time or another

if i send a disc to someone and they cant copy it, its really not my concern

right on my trade list, it clearly states, that im not going to warranty that the discs will be able to be copied by you

there are various reasons, your software that is used to copy things, may be the problem, perhaps a mis aligned disc drive, perhaps a number of other reasons

i move a bunch of discs per month, and yes some will have a problem, thats going to happen

when ever the problem becomes out of the normal %, i require the discs sent back----

i will honestly say 90% of the disc that i require to be returned for inspection--WORK JUST FINE ON MY MACHINES---

many people have poor dvd players, that are never serviced, cleaned or aligned, and most folks dont clean the discs either

and dont tell me i paid $ 300 for this player and its a sony or whatever.....--i dont care

i have an expensive mitsubishi that ran about $ 200 when new, and it doesnt play about 20 % of the discs i feed it

the philips 642 i have, is almost 100%, and walmart has them for $ 57 right now in stock, and its a progressive scan unit

i have told many people about this unit and all who purchased it have seen huge reductiuons in disc problems

I don't always check discs I send out because it is time consuming. However, I ALWAYS replace any problem discs. Burners make mistakes, and sometimes discs have dye "problems." I don't care if the disc plays, but won't copy - I will still replace the disc. Just because it copied fine for me, doesn't mean my burner didn't hiccup. Nothing is more frustrating than receiving dvds in a trade that I can't copy and I will not do that to any other trader. I clean all of my equipment regularly and I own enough dvd players and burners that I can figure out if the disc is bad or not. I've received dvds in trades that have been copied using dvdclone (or, software similar that copies errors and all) and in my opinion, those are bad discs. I would never knowingly send out bad dvds such as these.

There has been only one time that I was told "none of the discs will play." I replaced all 30+ dvds and did not require the trader to return the dvds to me. If it ever happens again - where more than 10% of the discs I send are "bad" - I'd want them returned because this would indicate an incompatibility with the discs and the other traders equipment. I'd still replace them, but - keep the returned set for a future trade - as long as nothing was wrong with it, of course To avoid this, I always try to remember to tell the trader what brand of media I'm using so they can ensure it will be compatible with their equipment.

I check the blank under a flashlight before using it, and if I see any dust/specks, I do my best to get them off. I'm usually red-in-the-face and dizzy afterwards, but do whatcha gotta do.

I have a very good player and a very good recorder but the recorder doesnt always read the disc i have had some new discs out of the package and the recorder will say unknown disc and eject it, sometimes it wont initialize the disc completly, dvd recorders and players are not anything like VCRs if its damp or cold sometimes the things wont work, i had a disc that was read unknown and ejected from my recorder and when i put in the same disc later that day it read it and recorded fine, so sometimes it just depends on weather conditions, for the most part dvd is far superior to vhs but it has its drawbacks.

If there's a disc that my player can read, but I can't copy on my PC, it's usually because of cheap (i.e. worthless) media. Examples of such media that have given me frequent read errors are CMC, Princo, Longten, MUST to name a few. These discs are worthless to me because I trade just about everything I receive. Please do your compadres a favor and avoid trading with cheap media. (for more about media quality, go to www.nomorecoasters.com).

In my experiences, the lower quality modes on tape, look better than the lower quality modes on disc.

Thats because on tape you can't go any lower than ep 6 hour, but on dvd you can go 10 hours and it may even be more on some recorders, which doesnt make any sense at all do to the fact that the recordings are so bad, I don't even understand why the designers of these burners put in such a slow speed.

But if you compare the 2 hour tape recording to the 2 hour dvd recording you will see that the dvd is much better

They have 10 hour tapes, but they are hard to find. I was comparing hour-to-hour on tape and disc.

On Super High Grade tape, a recording is extremely close to that of a DVD-R recording of the exact same thing, pending the shape the VCR's Heads are in.
