Cool Passat!

The Quantum was replaced in North America in 1990 by the Passat. Passat is what the Dasher and the Quantum had been called in Europe all along. In the 1990 model year, that name came to the New World. It's short for Passatwind, German for "trade wind." (Volkswagen likes to name cars for winds and currents to reflect the "international character" of their cars.)

This 1990 model is a GL sedan, with a two-liter, four-cylinder engine. The Passat proved to be popular in the midsize family car market.

Cool Jetta IV

The fourth-generation Jetta - with styling vaguely reminiscent of the Beetle - has been available since the 1999 model year. (In Europe it was renamed the Bora.) The Jetta has been a big seller in North America, and it will be replaced soon by an-all new fifth-generation model.

Here's a 2000 Jetta - in silver!

When Volkswagen introduced its Type 3 Fastback in the fall of 1965, it was complemented by a station wagon - the Type 3 Squareback!

Not knowing what this particular model was officially called when I was little, I always called it a "Beetle wagon!" Curiously, VW marketed it as a sedan.

A much less successful car from Volkswagen was the Type 4. In fact, the 4 series was an absolute sales disaster in the United States. Sold as the 411 and the 412 here, the VW Type 4's were available in fastback, notchback, and wagon form, but the notchback was not available in the U.S.

So what made the Type 4 Volkswagen's Edsel, at least in North American eyes? Mainly, it was due to it being overweight and underpowered, plus a tendency to use too much oil.

The Type 4 featured VW's first four-door sedan (pictured above, in European form), and its styling was more prosaic than previous VW sedans and squareback wagons. It was, in fact, the company's last attempt at a viable aircooled rear-engine design. By the mid-seventies, Volkswagen would move away from that configuration.

As you could tell, South Africa's VW Chico is the same thing as the original Golf/Rabbit model. But here's a very different Chico.

A 1975 concept car, the original Chico was Volkswagen's first attempt at designing an urban commuter car. More exercises at building a microcar for the masses would follow.

Cool Son of Chico!

A second Chico appeared on the European auto show circuit in 1991.

This was VW's third attempt at desigining a minicar (after the original Chico and the Student) for the European masses. The third time proved to be the charm, for the second Chico led to. . .

the LUPO!!

The Volkswagen Lupo is VW's smallest model. Two sizes smaller than the Golf, it has a 1-liter engine with only three cylinders; it's the most economical Volkswagen you can buy. Oh, that's right - if you're from North America, you can't buy it! VW doesn't sell the Lupo here, mainly for safety reasons (conforming to U.S. Safety standards would make the Lupo too expensive and underpowered for its size). That sucks!

Cool 1985 Jetta coupe

One upon a time, Volkswagen offered a two-door Jetta model. Pictured below is a 1985 model.

The coupe, which had been parrt of the Jetta lineup in the the first Jetta generation as well as the second, was dropped after 1991.

For every New Beetle there must be a New Beetle convertible!

It debuted in 2003, replacing the Golf-based Cabrio.
