Default The New Year's Wish

Here's a short New Year's Eve fic for you guys. Have fun!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

“What are you grinning about?” Nate Basso inquisitively asked his partner, CD DeLorenzo.

She sat across her desk, facing him, and had a corny grin on her face, as thought she were mocking him. “Nothing,” she giggled.

“What? Are you making fun of me?” Nate asked. There was nothing that piqued his curiosity more than a secret that CD kept from him.

“Haha, very funny,” CD retorted. “Actually, I was thinking that while I’m having a great time with my New Year’s Eve date tonight, you’ll be sitting at home, toasting a beer to Dick Clark,” she chuckled.

Nate rolled his eyes at her and tried to get his focus back on his paperwork. “Shouldn’t have asked,” he muttered under his breath. He hated that CD even wanted to date anyone other than him, much less actually do it. It seemed like everytime he came close to expressing some interest himself, she announced another date.

CD heard him, but pretended that she hadn’t. She knew how jealous he was. Somehow, it was comforting to her. ‘Hey,’ she reasoned with herself, ‘if you’d asked me out for New Year’s, we wouldn’t be having this discussion now.’

They both went back to work, ignoring the elephant in the room. A few minutes later, CD’s phone rang. “DeLorenzo,” she said. “Hey, how are you?.....I’m good.....” Nate could tell by her tone of voice that she was talking to her new date, and he was further disgusted. “You what? Yeah, fine, whatever. Later,” she snapped and hung up the phone.

Nate was again incurably curious. He raised one eyebrow. “What was that about?”

“I don’t want to talk about it,” she replied, and then paused. “OK, well, APPARENTLY, his old girlfriend is back in town, and he said that he still loves her, so he cancelled our date. He’s taking her out tonight instead.” She crossed her arms and scowled. “Jerk.”

Nate tried his best to hide his joy. “Yeah.....that’s too bad,” he suavely replied. “Some guys are real scum.”

“No kidding. And now here I am, 2 PM on New Year’s Eve, and dateless.”

“Well, at least you’re not the only one,” Nate said.

“Oh yeah. Well, now we’re both going to be toasting beers to Dick Clark tonight.”

“CD, that joke is really starting to get old.”

“Shut up,” she scoffed and scowled again.

“You know,” Nate said, ignoring CD’s last comment,” as long as we’re both dateless tonight.....we could....you know....be dateless together.”

CD looked up at him in surprise. “And do what?”

“I don’t know. We could order a pizza, rent a movie....I don’t know, something.”

“I don’t know, Nate—“

“What, you’ve got better plans? Come on, it’s New Year’s Eve. Let’s just hang out.”

“Well.....”

“Would you say yes if I told you that I think you look really cute in that sweater?”

Nate was finally awarded with a grin that CD flashed at him. “OK, OK, you wore me down. What else have I got to do?”

“Wow, thanks, I’ve never heard a warmer acceptance than that. It just makes my heart go pitter-pat,” Nate sarcastically replied, touching his hand to his chest.

CD laughed. “Shut up, Nate. I said yes. Stop complaining already.”

~~~~~~~~
Nate and CD agreed to meet at CD’s apartment at 8. Nate picked up pizza, pop, champagne, and a couple of movies on DVD. He nervously knocked on CD’s door at 8 PM sharp. He always felt so happy when he and CD spent time alone, especially outside of work. It always felt like anything could happen. And this being New Year’s Eve, an unusual air of magic filled the air.
“Come on in,” CD called from inside the apartment.
Nate let himself inside. “Here, I brought dinner and the entertainment,” he announced from the front room.
“Just leave it on the table. I’ll be right out.”
Nate placed the pizza, pop, and movies on the table, and then slipped the champagne into the refrigerator. Then he took his jacket off and rested it on the back of a chair. “Come on, CD, the pizza’s getting cold!” he called.
“I’m coming, I’m coming,” CD replied. A few seconds later, she emerged from her bathroom and joined Nate at the table. “Yum, it smells good!” She greeted him and smiled. “What kind did you get?”
“Pepperoni, grilled onions, and green olives, of course.”
“Awww, my favorite!”
“Well, yeah, is there any other kind?”
CD giggled and slapped his arm. “Come on, let’s eat.”
~~~~~~~~

Nate looked at his watch. It was 5 minutes to midnight. “Whoa, CD, it’s almost midnight,” he said.

“Hmmmm?” she replied, half asleep. She had dozed off a little while she and Nate watched “Sleepless in Seattle,” not realizing that she had been resting on him. “Is it the New Year yet?”

“No, not yet. 5 minutes to go,” he said.

“Cool. Let’s put on the Times Square coverage to see the ball drop.”

“CD, that ball dropped 3 hours ago.”

“So? It wasn’t midnight HERE 3 hours ago.”

Nate rolled his eyes. “OK, OK. I’ll go get the champagne.” He extracted himself from underneath CD and got up.

“What champagne? Did you bring some?”

“Nah, I thought I’d knock on random neighbors’ doors, hoping that they would like to share,” he replied with a grin and a wink.

“Nate, you’re in a very sarcastic mood tonight,” CD observed. On the inside, though, it felt as though butterflies were dancing after the wink that he gave her.

“I know, I know. I’m sorry.” He grabbed 2 flutes from CD’s cabinet and poured the champagne. Then he sauntered back over to the sofa with a sexy smile on his face, and handed one flute to CD. “Here. I hope this makes up for it.”

CD took it and smiled at him. “Maybe,” she coyly replied.

Nate settled back down on the sofa, and stretched his arm behind CD, resting it on her shoulders. “You know, CD, I’m really having a good time tonight. I can’t think of anyone else that I would like to ring the new year in with more.”

CD felt her heart melt. “Awww, thank you, Nate! That’s such a sweet thing to say. I’m having a good time, too. For being dateless, this evening has been one of my favorite New Year’s Eves ever.”

The countdown began on the TV. The mass of people at Times Square began to chant, “10, 9, 8, 7—“

Nate and CD joined them. “6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1—“ Then they looked at each other. “Happy New Year!” They could hear Auld Lang Syne playing on the TV. Virtually every couple on TV was kissing. Somehow, the moment called for a kiss—it DEMANDED it. They both took a chance as they felt their mouths being drawn together into a soft liplock.

After a brief, sweet kiss, they pulled back and looked into each other’s eyes. “Happy New Year,” Nate whispered in a sexy voice.

“Happy New Year,” CD whispered, in an equally sultry voice. Then she lowered her eyelids and passionately kissed him again. ‘Yes,’ she decided in her head, ‘This is definitely my favorite New Year’s Eve ever.’

THE END
