I think some of these "faux-punk" artists make decent music. The problem is the fans.

Some people are so afraid of the word "pop" after Britney and N'Sync, instead of remembering there's lot more to pop music than just the Orlando sound. Groups like Good Charlotte and Avril Lavigne are POP MUSIC. The music is alright FOR POP but some of the fans are so afraid to call them that because they think Pop=Britney when there is a lot more pop music out there than just TRL circa 1999.

I was channel surfing last night and while passing VH1 I saw a video by Avril Lavigine. This was the first time that I can recall that I have heard one of her songs and her style of music is certainly not punk. Her image may be a bit punky, but her music is pop. I agree with BuffySlayer, since the rise in popularity of Britney and Nysnc pop has become a dirty word. It is sort of like the term heavy metal in the eighties, no one wanted to be called a heavy metal band, even the heaviest of bands wanted to be called hard rock. There is no shame in being a pop band, after all The Beatles were a pop band, and if it is all right for The Beatles to be a pop band then it should be all right for anyone to be pop. Britney and Backstreet Boys are actually bubblegum pop. This type of music is aimed mostly at young girls and has always been with us. Back in the 1960's there was The Monkees and Herman's Hermits, even The Bee Gees started out as bubblegum pop. In the late eighties there was Debbie Gibson and New Kids on The Block.

exactly!! I remember someone on an AOL message board got so upset when I called Matchbox Twenty a "pop band". I mean, they are pop! It's a shame Britney and co. ruined a perfectly good word to describe a genre of music that has been with us since the Beatles and Beach Boys.

Maroon 5 IS A POP BAND
Avril Lavigne IS A POP SINGER
Good Charlotte IS A POP BAND
Matchbox 20 IS A POP BAND
Franz Ferdinand IS A POP BAND

pop and bubblegum (Britney, N'Sync, BSB) pop are not the same thing. There is no shame in being pop. It's a valid genre of music just like rock, country, r&b, rap and dance. Just because a few artists are bubblegum pop doesn't mean the entire genre equates "pre-fabricated music for 12 year old girls".

Matchbox Twenty isn't pop they are rock. There's a huge difference.

you missed the point of my comment. You can be pop and not be Orlando pop.

Matchbox 20 IS pop... and there is no reason to be ashamed to say it. Maybe their album tracks are harder edge, but the majority of their singles ARE pop. Unwell, 3AM, If You're Gone, Disease... are pop songs. Don't have such a blinded bias against pop music because you think "Matchbox 20 are pop" means "Matchbox 20 were assembled by a producer to sing generic bubblegum ditties for 12 year old girls". Because it's NOT and that was not the intention of where I was getting at calling them pop.

There is more types of pop music than teen pop. Groups like Matchbox 20 and Maroon 5 appeal more to audiences that appreciate melodic music. You will never hear either of them getting played on "New Rock" stations alongside Linkin Park and Godsmack.

Why do people automatically make pop out to be a 4 letter word? I am a pop fan, I hate N'Sync and can just barely tolerate Britney, and I am proud to say it. Pop is more than one particular style.
