If anyone remembers the name of this episode let me know cause i have it on tape, but cant remember the name. Anyway, during the episode Beaver buys a raffle ticket and wins a sports car and Ward says to Beaver he has to give the car back because he is just too young and Wally said something to the effect "yeah beav whats it gonna do sit in the garage and collect dust until you turn 16?" This was stupid as Ward could have just kept the car for himself until Beaver was old enough. Who would turn down a free car if their young son won it?

I know that I wouldn't. What kind of raffle gives away a free car to a child anyway? But I guess that using the money for education was a sensible idea. He probably would have been worrying them about the car until he was 16. Knowing Beaver he probably would have let Larry talk him into taking it for a spin

Well if it were my kid I would have done just what Ward did. I would let the kid have a few hundred bucks right away to spend on clothes/toys whatever but the rest of it would go in the bank. Anyways Ward was very sensible about where his money went and would not have wanted to pay insurance and maintenance on a second vehicle.

Ward already had a car, and probably didn't want to drive around a sports car (unlike Wally, who grows up drives around a '61 aqua Firebird), or let it sit around for so many years (he'd have to find a place to store it too), so I think its very reasonable that he sold it and probably got Beaver a nice chunk of change to save for his future.

I think Ward did the right thing, even though Beaver would obviously feel hurt by it at first. He offered to let Beaver keep enough money to buy himself a 'new bicycle' [often seems a running goal of Beaver's thoughout the series], but Beaver wanted to exascerabate his persecution complex by refusing that. Both he and Ward should have thought bigger, though; a trampoline, a big camping tent, an above-ground pool... still a good hunk of money to grow in a bank account.
But even if Beaver's college education was taken care of otherwise, it was the right thing to do to sell the brand new car. If Beaver was to be allowed his own car when he gets his license, it make logical sense to have the money there in the bank earning interest and to buy a new car then, instead of having the car he won, which would be 5 or 6 years old, considereably depreciated even if it was very rarely driven; and that's not to mention the insurance on the car [which definitely should bought in case of fire or theft; their homeowner's policy would not cover that]. Like Ward, if I were in his position, I would regret that Beaver did not have the maturity to understand the overall situation, but I would have done the same thing, and reserved some of the money-- about $100 (around $600 indexed to this day)-- for Beaver to spend on reasonable items of pleasure. |

I think Ward did the right thing here. Ward really illusrated that he is a very unselfish person. He could easily have 'confiscated' the car for his own use if he wanted to, but instead he sold it and got money for Beaver's college fund.

I don't know if driving ages varied from state to state. But, in this episode, Wally says that you have to be 18 to drive.
"Beaver, you know you can't let the car sit in the garage till you're 18." Is this a blopper? Or did driving age vary from state to state back in LITB days? Jack |

I believe that the age in whice one is eligible for getting a drivers license still varies from state to state. In Massachusetts, for instance, you have to be 16 1/2 before you can get a license, however there are a few states in which I believe one only has to be 14 in order to get a drivers liscense.

Later in the show, when Wally gets his license I believe he is 17. Nowadays, in the state of Ohio you can get your temps at 15 1/2 but can't get the "real" license until you turn 16. |

Just saw this episode today....
It was cool but it was kinda dumb. What school or auction or kid would want to let a kid have a car? Plus, what raffle would let a kid have a Hawaiian vacation or even a mink coat.... It's funny cause you see the look on the boy's faces when Ward comes in about the car and Beaver is thinking, gosh, Eddie was right... HOw often is Eddie right?

How were raffle judges / board in charge of the project supposed to know Theodore Cleaver was a kid? Even if they did know, they offered certain prizes and one of his tickets was drawn as a winner, so the prize had to be offered or they would be guilty of fraud.
As for Eddie being right 'how many times?' It may be hard to count, but more than once, anyway. For one example, "Beaver Won't Eat", the Brussels sprouts episode. Beaver is all down because he can't go the football game because he wouldn't eat the sprouts, then Eddie comes and tells him, "Look, kid, I guarantee they'll take you... they'll let you suffer for a while, but then they'll come through with some sort of a deal." That's exactly what happened. |
