Buttondown Shirts and Skinny Belts. - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

When I see Wally and his other friends wearing those 50s' style 'skinny belts' and 'buttodown collars',I can't help but reminisce a little,and think of how I too wore them back then.
I also remember those slacks the guys wore with that little belt on the back. Oh!,and yes,those 'Ice Cream Parlors','Drive-In Hamburger Joints' and 'Malt Shops'
Ahh memories! (Smile)

When I was in high school (mid & late 70's) most of us guys had hair over our ears, and it seemed any kind of pants besides bluejeans would get comments. There were some who wanted to divide the entire student body as being in one of 2 categories-- the hippies or the goat-ropers. "Hippie" (I think) was really a passe term by then, but it was used for those who liked rock music and 'hip' speech, and drove hotrods or motorcycles; and "goat-roper" meant they were into country music and drove pickups or "uncool" cars, and/or had a less rebellious dispositon. The bluejeans were what both groups had in common. To the 'cool' group, being called 'goat-roper' was the ultimate insult.

Our small Texas town did have a drive-in where a lot of hanging out was done. The place didn't even have any inside seating at all. I think all this congregating continued into the 80's when the old place was torn down and a new one-- with inside seating-- was built. Then the kids started using a shopping plaza parking lot for the big hangout spot.

Really, I always thought I was born 15 to 20 years too late, and I would liked to have been a high schooler and college-age in the 50's and early 60's. I am aware that the nastalgic images left by LITB, Ozzie & Harriet, et al, present the age as being more innocent and less complicated than it was, but it can seem rather inviting to have experienced the first wave of rock&roll, the beginning of the space program, and when professional athletes had to work to become rich, not just sign a contract.

I, too, would have liked to be in high school about ten years earlier. I graduated in '72, when the "hippie" culture was in full swing. Then again, if I graduated from high school in '62, I'd be 60 now instead of 50. Lol!

I would rather see people in button down shirts and skinny belts than in baggy jeans and boxers any day.
