Another follow-up post on the emmy awards. During the entire decade from 1960-70 there were collectively only 10 comedy actors nominated for regular supporting roles in sitcoms (Tim Conway from McHales's Navy was a nominee in 1963). In some years drama and comedy actors were lumped together. In some years these were lumped together with actresses and performers from one-shot shows or guest stars. Very odd to see someone like Don Knotts of Any Griffith beat out dramatic actresses. The list starts from 1966 as the category more or less normalized itself at this point.
What do you all think of the choices? 1966- Don Knotts- Andy Griffith Show- WINNER Frank Gorshin- Batman Werner Klemperer- Hogan's HEroes Morey Amsterdam- Dick van Dyke Show NOTE: Knotts won for a guest appearance as he had quit in 1965. Frank Gorshin was up for tman's debut episode. Arguably if he got in his co-villians Cesar Romero and Burgess Meredith could have been considered too. People like Frank Sutton from Gomer Pyle were overlooked. Morey Amsterdam's only mention as this year 1967- Don Knotts- WINNER for another guest appearance. His 5th win in as many nominations Werner Klemperer Gale Goron- Lucy Show 1968- Werner Klemperer- WINNER Gale Gordon William Demarest- My Three Sons Jack Cassidy- He and She NOTE: Demarest got the only acting nom ever for a My Three Sons' regular this year. Cassidy's show got mentions for 3 actors but wasn't up for best series. LEFT OUT: Ed Platt, Bernie Koppell and Dick Gautier in Get Smart, David White in Bewitched 1969- In a throwback to the early 60s Werner Klemperer beat two drama actor (Greg Morris and Leonard Nimoy). Ned Glass who had a recurring role as the super on Julia was a loser in a catgory for individual performance by a supporting actor. 1970- Michael Constantine- Room 222- WINNER Charles Nelson Reilly- Ghost and Mrs Muir Werner Klemperer IMO: Constantine deserved it 1971- Ed Asner- Mary Tyler Moore Gale Gordon- Here's Lucy Michael Constantine NOTE: This year marks a kind of changing of the guard as Asner represents the new kind of realism , Gordon the old guard and Constantine falls somewhere in between 1972- Ed Asner- WINNER Rob Reiner- All in the Family Ted Knight- Mary Tyler Moore 1973, 74 and 75 (exact same people each time) Ed Asner- WINNER in 1975 Rob Reiner- WINNER in 1974 Ted Knight - WINNER in 1973 McClean Stevenson- MASH Gary Burghoff- MASH 1976- replace Rob Reiner with Abe Vigoda from Barney Miller. Harry Morgan replaced McClean Stevenson in MASH and in this list. Ted Knight was the WINNER 1977- same names as 1976. Gary Burghoff was the one of the youngest WINNERs here 1978- Rob Reiner- WINNER Tom Bosley- Happy Days Gary Burghoff- MASH Harry Morgan- MASH Vic Tayback- Alice NOTE: Reiner won in his last year as the Meathead for an episode in which he and Archie were locked in a cellar. MISSING: Norman Fell from Three's Company, at least one player from Soap, the Barney Miller players 1979 Robert Guilliame- Soap- WINNER Gary Burghoff Harry Morgan Danny DeVito Max Gail- Barney Miller IMO: Guilliame was more deserving for this than for his spinoff series for which he got 5 noms 1980 Harry Morgan- WINNER Steve Landesburg- Barney Miller Mike Farell- MASH Howard Hesseman- WKRP in Cincinatti Vic Tayback- Alice NOTE: Hesseman got in but his co-stars Tim Reid and Gordon Jump were also good actors. Only year in which no Taxi actors appear 1981 Danny deVito- WINNER david Ogden Stiers- MASH Harry Morgan Howard Hesseman Steve Landesburg 1982 Christopher Lloyd- Taxi- WINNER Danny DeVito Ron Glass- Barney Miller Steve Landesburg David Ogden Stiers Harry Morgan NOTE: One of only 2x in which there were 6 names. 2 actors each from 3 shows 1983 Christopher Lloyd- WINNER Dany DeVito Harry Morgan Nicholas Colasanto - Cheers Eddie Murphy- Saturday Night Live NOTE: Variety and comedy were combined in the early 80s which explains Murphy's nomination, though his co-star Joe Piscopo arguably could've gotten mentioned too. The only year in which only one MASH actor appears here 1984 Pat Harrington Jr- One Day at A Time- WINNER Rene Auberjenous (sp?)- Benson Nicholas Colosanto- Cheers George Wendt- Cheers Tom Poston- Newhart NOTE: I always wondered what Harrington did this year to win given that he was never noted before and the show was in its final season of a very long run. Maybe the Cheers guys were too new to win, Auberjenous not considered significant enough and Poston not special enough to win. OVERLOOKED: Max Wright, John Fiedler and Charles Robinson from Buffalo Bill 1985 John Larroquette- Night Court- WINNER Nicholas Colosanto George Wendt Michael J Fox- Family Ties John Ratzenberger- Cheers NOTE: Cheers is the only show to have 3 actors appear in either any regular comedy acting category, Colosanto is the first actor mentioned here after his death 1986 John Larroquette- WINNER George Wendt John Ratzenberger Tom Poston Malcolm Jamal Warner- Cosby Show NOTE: Warner at 16 was the category's youngest nominee. is co-star Keshia Knight Pulliam was only 6 or 7 and was up for supporting actress 1987 replace Warner with Woody Harrelson from Cheers. Larroquette WON again 1988 John Larroquette- WINNER Woody Harrelson Peter Scolari- Newhart Kelsey Grammar- Cheers George Wendt 1989 Woody Harrelson- WINNER Peter Scolari Meschach Taylor- Designing Women Geore Wendt Joe Regalbuto- Murphy Brown NOTE: Woody is the only Cheers actor to win here 1990 Alex Rocco- Famous Teddy Z- WINNER Kelsey Grammar Charles Kimbrough- Murphy Brown Jerry Van Dyke- Coach Woody Harrelson NOTE: Teddy Z had the briefest run of any show to ever win an emmy for a comedy series actor 1991 Jonathan Winters- Davis Rules WINNER Woody Harrelson Jerry van Dyke Michael Jeter- Evening Shade Charles Durning - Evening Shade 1992 Michael Jeter- WINNER Jerry Van Dyke Charles Durning Jay Thomas- Murphy Brown Harvey Feirstein -Cheers Jason Alexander- Seinfeld NOTE: Guests stars and regulars were thrown together this year. Thomas had won in 90 and 91 for his guest role on Murphy. Alexander is this field's biggest loser 7x 1993 Michael Richards- Seinfeld- WINNER Michael Jeter Jason Alexander Rip Torn- Larry Sanders Jeffrey Tambor- Larry Sanders NOTE: Repetitiveness becomes commonplace again after this year 1994 Richards wins again. Jerry van Dyke and David Hyde Pirece form Frasier replace Michael Jeter and Jeffrey Tambor 1995 Richards, Alexander, Torn, Hyde Pierce and David Schimmer from Friends. David Hyde Pierce is the WINNER 1996 Schimmer is out and Tambor is back in. Torn is the first actor from a cable show to win for any regular role 1997 same as 1996. Richards wins a third time 1998 Alexander, Torn, Tambor, Hyde Pierce and Phil Hartman from NewRadio. David Hyde Pirece is the WINNER NOTE: Hartman seemingly had to die to get nominated but sympathy went only so far because he didn't win 1999 David Hyde Pierce- WINNER David Spade- Just Shoot Me Peter Boyle- Everybody Loves Raymond John Mahoney- Frasier Peter McNichol- Ally McBeal NOTE: The end of Seinfeld and Larry Sanders forced this field to adopt new people 2000 Sean Hayes- Will and Grace-WINNER Brad Garrett- Everybody Loves Raymond Peter Boyle David Hyde Pierce Peter McNichol 2001 Peter McNichol- WINNER Sean Hayes Daid Hyde Pierce Peter Boyle Robert Downey Jr- Ally McBeal NOTE: Downey seemed lilke he would have won 2002 Brad Garrett- WINNER Sean Hayes Peter Boyle David Hyde Pierce Bryan Cranston- Malcolm in the Middle NOTE: Cranston is the only case in comedy I can think of of an actor being up for support while the actress who plays his wife is up for lead. In drama it occurred a few times in St Elsewhere, Thirtysomething and Hill St Blues 2003 add John Mahoney to the 5 from 2002. Garrett won again 2004? I wouldn't be surprised to see Garrett, Pierce and Boyle back along with maybe Jeffrey Tambor and I guess Hayes as a habit vote. Maybe the neighbor from Curb Your Enthusiasm as well. |
