Which 80's movie starting music icons Madonna and Prince do you like better? Purple Rain or Desperately Seeking Susan?

Desperately Seeking Susan wasn't too bad but I'll take Purple Rain.

The big difference between the two movies, is that "Desperately Seeking Susan" cast were professional actors, and "Purple Rain" with the exeption of the actors that played Prince's parents, were not professional actors. Though some members of the cast like Morris Day, and Apollonia went on to presue acting carrers.
In Purple Rain, Prince and his friends played themselfs. Because Apollonia was a last minute replacement for Vanity, I always felt Apollonia didn't play herself, like everyone else in the cast played themselfs. Though the character in the movie was called Apollonia, from what I know about Vanity and Apollonia personalities, Apollonia basicly played Vanity in the movie. The lead lady was based on Vanity, when she left the project, it was too late to rewrite the character to be more like Apollonia. What I find ironic, is that "Desperately Seeking Susan" is a comedy, while "Purple Rain" is a drama, I think "Purple Rain" was more funny. I don't know if that is good thing or a bad thing for either movie. One of the big reasons for that is that "Purple Rain" had Morris Day, that guy was hilarous. As far as comparing "Desperately Seeking Susan" and "Purple Rain", I liked both movies, but I liked "Purple Rain" better. |

both movies have their pros and cons.
Purple Rain has a GREAT soundtrack, and the movie makes you feel like you really are in Minneapolis circa 1984. However, I do feel like they could've gone into developing the Kid/Appolonia/Morris triangle better than they did. Desperately Seeking Susan had a great Madonna song (but 1 song compared to 9 on PR), and it had a great cast as well. The downfall to DSS (and the reason Rosanna Arquette resents it nowadays, despite it being her most successful film) is that when Madonna was cast, the producers seemed to suddenly change it to "hey, look at how cool Madonna's fashion is, we can get tons of girls and drag queens to wanna own the clothing she wears in this movie", so they really overdid it. She was already outragiously dressed enough back in 84-85 but they took it over the top in this movie. |

Well DSS could have had a great soundtrack. Not only did it have Madonna "Into the Grove" one of the best Madonna songs ever. But the other background songs were very good. It had Dee Dee Sharp "Mash Potato Man", Run DMC "Sucker MC" and The Fixx "One Thing Leads to Another." That soundtrack could have been great, if not at least very good. They never released a soundtrack featuring the songs from the movie. (there is a soundtrack featuring the background music of Thomas Newman)
And beleive it or not the Purple Rain soundtrack could have been better, if it included all of the songs from the movie, such as the Time "Jungle Love" and "The Bird", Apollonia 6 "Sex Shooter", and the unreleased Dez Dickerson song "Modernaire", as well as the extended version of "Let's Go Crazy", and the instrumental version of "God." I do have the Time and Apollonia 6 songs on their respective albums "Ice Cream Castle" and "Apollonia 6", so not having their songs on the Purple Rain soundtrack is no big deal. Would have been nice to have all on the songs on one album, but that is the limitation of LPs, which they used in 1984. Still Purple Rain is one of the greatest soundtracks of all time. I prefer Purple Rain. I've only seen Desperately Seeking Susan once, and that was not long after it was released, so it's been a while and I don't remember much. PR though is an all-time favorite of mine.
