Bertuzzi Done For The Year, Vancouver Slapped With $250,000 Fine
CANADIAN PRESS Thusday March 11, 2004 TORONTO, ON - Vancouver Canuck Todd Bertuzzi has been suspended for the rest of the season, including the playoffs, for his on-ice attack that left Colorado player Steve Moore with a fractured neck, the NHL ruled Thursday. The suspension follows Wednesday's disciplinary hearing into his actions. Videotape of the incident during a game at General Motors Place shows Bertuzzi skating up behind Moore, punching him in the head and driving him face first down into the ice. Todd Bertuzzi (left) and Steve Moore (CP PHOTO) Moore lay bleeding and unconscious on the ice after the attack. He was taken to hospital, where he is being treated for fractured neck vertebrae, a concussion and cuts to his face. As a result of the injuries, the Avalanche said Moore, a 25-year-old from Windsor, ON, would not return to play this season. Hours after Wednesday's hearing, Bertuzzi broke down in tears as he spoke publicly for the first time since the attack. Bertuzzi apologized to Moore, the Avalanche forward whom he attacked in a game Monday night. "I just want to apologize for what happened out there and I feel awful for what transpired," he said. "I'm relieved to hear that Steve's going to have a full recovery." Bertuzzi fought back tears during the brief appearance before the media in Vancouver, at one point turning his back on the cameras as he tried to compose himself. He also apologized to Moore's family and to hockey fans for his behaviour. "I don't play the game that way, because I'm not a mean-spirited person," he said. Vancouver police are treating the incident as a potential assault, and say they will turn the file over to the Crown when their investigation is complete. The attack on Moore was widely considered revenge for a check that Moore laid on Canucks captain Markus Naslund in a Feb. 16 match. That hit left Naslund with a concussion that put him out of action for three games. The league said his future status will be determined at a later date. The Vancouver Canucks were also fined $250,000 US

That has to rank in the top five with all-time cheap hits in the NHL. TB may have just cost Vancouver a lot of playoff money. They're in the fourth spot in the Conference right now; let's see if and how far they drop before the season ends. They will more than likely still make the playoffs but I doubt whether they'll go very far. Moore should sue him.
