I don't mean to be a hater. They did have their moments, but they were pretty much the same old joke(s). Helen is horny, Stanley doesn't want to....then Stanley makes some joke about Jack being gay (cut to a too-close up of Stanley's face). It all just got irritating after awhile. Don Knotts' Mr. Furley made me laugh a lot more (and more often).

Just my opinion...but maybe the opinion of the producers too? I remember seeing this thing on TV awhile back about "Three's Company." apparantly, Norman Fell was hesitant to leave the popular, established parent show to do a spin-off, so there was a clause in his contract that if the show was taken off the air within one year, then he could return to "Three's Company." But "The Ropers" was on a little more than that, so they didn't have to take him back. and since they didn't, I'm guessing that they didn't want him back. Of course, Don Knotts may have had a longer contract in place by then, so they didn't have room for both of them. I'm not sure about that part.

They might have figured, "if audiences don't want to watch the Ropers on their own show, maybe they don't want to see them on "Three's Company."

Actually I was just looking through the TV Guides from that year and Cleveland Amory hated the show, putting it as his worst new sitcom of the year. However his taste wasn't too bad as he loved Occasional Wife, Run Buddy Run and Love on a Rooftop. All of which lasted a season or less.

Popular got mixed reviews; leaning towards the negative. Most critics praised the show for eventually finding a witty groove that set it apart from other teen drama's on the WB, but ultimately it was seen as lacking in substance and depth.
