Confused So Wait! Ann Marie Didn't Marry Don on 'That Girl???'

I always thought that the two got hitched, but I read somewhere that Marlo Thomas refused to let her character get married because that would send the wrong message???

The show ended before Ann Marie and Donald's wedding because Marlo Thomas didn't want to send the message that marriage was the only way for a young woman to find happiness.

Interesting that years later some feminists felt let down when Marlo Thomas got married! Just because marriage isn't the ONLY way to find happiness, it doesn't mean a feminist should never marry.

I saw MarloThomas on a talk show and she said "I fell in love!" I don't blame her. I had a crush on Phil Donahue when I was an adolescent.

If they had married, I wonder if they'd have changed the show title to either "That Couple" or "That Woman"?

I just thought Marlo felt it would change the show. I read she planned to do the show 5 years. I always wonder with these woman driven shows, just how they support them selves/ Did all her jobs able her to pay rent/clothes, food, etc or did her dad help out?

Some series benefited from marriages, in my opinion, like My Three Sons -- which had a lot of them -- but for example I Dream of Jeannie I thought worked better pre-wedding. In the case of That Girl, the couple was so committed, and not unlike husband & wife, that I tend to believe having them carry on as newlyweds wouldn't have made a major difference...!

They could have had them split up; that would have been really daring!

Yeah I suppose she could found a new boyfriend. But I think the audience got to know Don so much it would have great to have the last episode with a marriage. End the show and it would have tie up Ann's life. As for me If I found a guy and dated him 5 years I would eventually marry him.

Marlo updated the characters when she appeared on the TV Land awards a few years ago and even ended by saying, Oh Donald.
