These lyrics are in reference to the practice of record companies releasing shortened versions of hit songs, usually edited to between 3:00 and 3:30, in order to make them more "radio friendly". Also correct. In fact the next line, which I didn't use, is:

[If you're gonna have a hit
You gotta make it fit]

So they cut it down to 3:05
