Exclamation Patricia Heaton FINALLY Breaks Her Silence About "Back to You"

PH: I wasn't really sure about Back To You. But in many ways, me, Kelsey [Grammer], Ty [Burrell] and Fred Willard, I thought, "How could it not run?" So you just never know in this business, which is one of the things that makes it a great business is that anything can happen. It's funny that Kelsey's new show is on, mine follows him, and Ty Burrell's show, run by the exact same producers, runs after our show. It's odd that we are all together again.

It's just really too bad ABC couldn't have just picked up BTY. Oh well.

It really is odd how all 3 shows are on back to back this season. It's also funny how instead of having 3 shows, ABC could have had just 1 with all 3 actors in it, lol. But like Patty said, that's how the business goes sometimes.

Back to You was ok in the beginning, but near the end, it just plain sucked. The numbers sucked, and the storylines sucked. I don't blame FOX for cancelling it.

I think that's because they put too much emphasis on the daughter and not enough on the newsroom. Marsh, Gary, Montana and Ryan were all very funny characters who took a backseat to the Gracie story.

That might be it. Didn't the weather girl (Montana, correct?) leave too. After that it was downhill for me.

Fox interfered with the direction of the show. BTY also had the misfortune to air in a strike year too. They could never get any kind of traction. And ratings were still better than Til Death.

You're right. Circumstances seemed to conspire against this show. But hey, that's show business!

Exactly. Just when it was starting to pick up a bit of momentum, that's when the strike hit.

I only saw a few episodes of the show and I thought it was great. It's too bad things didn't work out.

and Fox never treats it's comedies well. They canceled Titus in it's prime and GFL which luckily was picked up by the WB. They haven't had a hit sitcom since That 70's Show and Til Death does not count.

I blame its cancellation simply on the misfortune of airing on FOX. FOX is just not a network you want to be on if you're a sitcom. Back to You was a great show, but like you said, FOX interfered in its direction, probably trying to kill it, then cancelled it a day after they said it was a shoo-in for renewal.

Then of course there was Kevin Reilly, who hated the show from the beginning. It just wasn't a good year for BTY all around.
